Previous professional experience

I have worked in Higher Education since 1995, and before that I was a Physical Education Teacher in a secondary school. After completing A levels, I was a self-employed builder for several years. I left building to study a sports degree and have never left. I studied at Brunel University and then became a lecturer there. At Brunel University I led research methods and revitalised the teaching of statistics so that students rated it one of the most enjoyable courses on the degree! After 12 years at Brunel University,  I moved to the University of Wolverhampton where I re-wrote all sport and exercise psychology courses, initially teaching on all levels including undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil, PhD teaching, students from the Royal Air Force and supporting professional training of new staff. I have been course leader of the MSc increasing student number threefold and from my period of leadership, several students have since become academic members of staff. I supported members of staff to pursue research with Dr Tracey Devonport completing her PhD, becoming a reader and with whom I do a great deal of collaborative research, including PhD supervision. My PhD students have now supervised students of their own, and are currently seeking professorial appointments. I maintain research collaboration with former PhD students, with my PhD supervisor, Prof Peter Terry and long-term academic colleagues and friends, Prof Greg Whyte and Dr Costas Karageorghis.

I have been a professor since 2004. I led the hugely successful British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences Conference in 2006. I was a member of the ESRC project on emotion regulation, led a worldwide project on emotion regulation and emotion, and more recently, am a member of the research institute for UKactive, where the goal is to increase physical activity. Our recent article Death by effectiveness: Exercise as medicine caught in the efficacy trap!" published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine provides a very good summary of our position on exercise and the important research that lies ahead.
