Developing health assessment and examination skills within clinical practice (6NH047)

The health assessment module is validated by the NMC as part of the specialist practice programme and is also available as a stand-alone module.  It is a theoretical module that is delivered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  During the 12 week module you will study each body system and the recommended method for assessing the system.  Throughout the module you will be supported to combine each system to a whole health assessment, pertinent to your area of practice.  As a theoretical module there are no compulsory practice based competences – it is expected that you will continue to practise, contextualise and consolidate the learning in your practice setting after completion of the module.

The module is assessed through submission of a case study relevant to your own area of practice.  It is often studied as a precursor to the independent prescribing qualification*, where the skills learned can be further consolidated through completion of prescribing competences.

The module is delivered by a variety of lecturers with different specialities and is a mixture of classroom based delivery and practical examination skills.  For each 2 hours of taught content it is expected that the student will undertake an additional 2 hours of self-directed study to achieve the outcomes of the course.  This is available through blended learning using the online learning framework

* Specific entry criteria is required to access the independant prescribing course.
