Slaves of Fashion: Symposium

‌The University of Wolverhampton, in collaboration with Wolverhampton Art Gallery  and Creative Black Country are pleased to present Slaves of Fashion: Symposium at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Saturday 18 August, 10am – 4pm.

The Slaves of Fashion Symposium brings together artists, art historians, activists, curators, and consumer industry experts to respond to, expand on, and debate contemporary themes emerging from the exhibition Slaves of Fashion by internationally-renowned artists The Singh Twins, Wolverhampton Art Gallery (21 July – 16 September).

This free symposium brings together artists, art historians, academics and ethical consumer activists to respond to, expand on and debate themes emerging from the exhibition Slaves of Fashion by internationally-renowned artists The Singh Twins currently on show at Wolverhampton Art Gallery from 21 July–16 September.

The Singh Twins’ Slaves of Fashion series (which combines traditional hand-painting with historical archive material and digitally created art) explores how the history of Indian textiles is a global story of Empire and Colonialism, conflict, slavery, luxury lifestyle and shared heritage, which has contemporary relevance - connecting to ethical trade and consumerism in the world today.
