West Park first opened in June 1881. To aid the war effort during World War One, ducks and rabbits were raised, and vegetables grown. While in 1942 the park was turned into allotments. The metal gates and railings, unlike many others in the country, survived being removed and melted down during the war.
Not only will you benefit from the fresh air in the park as a whole – but if you’ve caught so-called Freshers ‘Flu, we recommend you pop into the park’s glorious grade II listed glasshouse. You’ll find the warm and humid atmosphere can help clear your airways and ease those sniffles, while taking in the flora can only help your state of mind!
If you’re a budding geologist, there may be various clusters of rocks around the park for you to enjoy… but if you prefer rock of a musical kind, head to the city’s annual WV1 Fest (held in the park) for an enviable line-up of the country’s best tribute acts to AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden and more!
As well as being the obvious choice for a kick-around, the park is the ideal place to head if you want to improve your fitness. There’s a playground for the little ‘uns, tennis courts, outdoor gym equipment, and the main path is a convenient mile long so you can measure your progress. Or if you want to get up-and-running, join the national Park Run, every Saturday from 9am.
There’s nothing quite like reconnecting with nature to help your wellbeing. So head to the park and practise a little mindfulness. Take in the trees and plants, the birdsong and lapping water. You could feed the ducks (or fish!) or help the squirrels with their autumn gathering. Just don’t get nibbled yourself!
