New policing students on the beat

The University of Wolverhampton has launched a new policing degree which enables successful students to apply to become a police officer in any force in England and Wales.

The first cohort of students on the BA (Hons) Professional Policing reported for duty this month.

The new course is licensed by the College of Policing and enables students to learn about key policing structures, processes and practices relating to areas of criminal investigation, public order, counter-terrorism, response policing and digital crime, among others.

Taught by experts including former senior police officers, students will engage in both practical and classroom based scenarios.

The course has modules covering contemporary policing issues such as cybercrime, terrorism and public protection concerns. Students will become immersed in the role of a police constable, understanding the origins of the constable and how historical high profile police matters have shaped modern day policing.

As well as gaining a comprehensive knowledge of police powers and procedures students will develop investigative skills including how to interview witnesses and suspects. The concept of police accountability will feature strongly throughout the course, and how that links with the standards of police professional behaviour.

With the launch of the new Professional Policing degree we are once again at the forefront of Policing education in the UK. As a University which prides itself on the relevance of our courses, this degree will continue to ensure that our students have the professional  skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a career in policing.”

The degree develops skills which are appropriate to a range of public policing and security roles, including: the role of civilian investigator (within the Independent Office for Police Conduct; Revenue and Customs; Border Force; GCHQ, Social Services; the Security Services; the Health and Safety Executive; Environmental Health, G4S and forensic accountancy firms, amongst other allied or related areas), civilian custody officer, intelligence analyst, cybercrime specialist or as a political affairs officer.
