International Women’s Day event inspires girls to consider careers in STEM

The University of Wolverhampton celebrated International Women’s Day with an event targeted at getting girls interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Over 120 primary school girls aged between 9 and 11 visited the University’s City Campus in Wolverhampton on Friday 8Th March 2019 to get a taste of STEM subjects through interactive taster activities in Biomedical Science and Physiology, Physics, Forensics, Pharmacy, Computing, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Maths, Architecture and Built Environment.

The schools that visited were Claverly Primary School, Shropshire, Edgar Stammers Academy, Walsall and Albert Bradbeer Primary Academy, Maryvale Primary School and Reaside Academy, Birmingham.

Dr Petula Nurse, Head of STEM Outreach and Community Engagement at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and we wanted to show young girls, through this outreach event, that there is a place for them in the world of STEM.

“The activities were designed to engage the girls and encourage active participation and our aim was to make the STEM subject exciting and fun for them.

“The day was a great success and we hope that we have sowed the seeds of STEM in the minds of the future generation of engineers, architects and scientists.”

Jill Benson, Claverly Primary School teacher, said: “Just looking at my girls today is absolutely fascinating, seeing three of my children who I wouldn’t have thought would be interested in science just being totally gripped.  I can see children talking about being architects. Some of my children already had ideas about what they wanted to do, but this is inspiring them even more.”

Anyone interested in studying STEM courses in the Faculty of Science and Engineering should register for the next Open Day on Saturday 15th June 2019.
