JAMES SMALL: Graduate engineers a future in manufacturing

“The relationships the University has with local businesses means that engineers are in a really good position when searching for employment.” 

James Small has engineered a great career for himself after securing a degree in Engineering at the University of Wolverhampton.

James graduated from the Faculty of Science and Engineering with a First Class Degree in Mechanical Engineering with Professional Development  in 2018 and has just graduated with a Master’s degree in Advanced Technology Management (Engineering Analysis).

He was also awarded the FBC Manby Bowdler Prize for the Top Performing Engineering student on a Master’s programme for achieving the highest grade point average overall in the School of Engineering.

He has secured a full time job as a graduate engineer with Grainger and Worrall, a castings and engineering company based in Bridgnorth.

Based at the Telford Innovation Campus, James, 30 from Broseley gained valuable experience working for the University of Wolverhampton Race Team (UWR), in particular as Team Leader for Formula Student, a global competition which takes place at the Silverstone Circuit.

He said: ““The engineering campus at Telford has some great facilities and capabilities which I was very interested to explore. It has a very good reputation for employability and friends of mine who studied here recommended it.

“I have always had an interest in engineering, and my father is a mechanical engineer. Following on from research into job opportunities this seemed like a very secure career path. For anyone wanting to work in design, it covers all the theory and engineering principles needed to validate designs.

“Geographically the University is in a really good location for engineering, and the relationships that the University has with local businesses means that engineers are in a really good position when searching for employment.”
