Pharmacy academics raise awareness at community health initiative

31/05/2018

Academics from the University of Wolverhampton took their expertise out into the community for Health Awareness Day recently.

Professor Patrick Ball and Dr Hana Morrissey from the School of Pharmacy in the Faculty of Science and Engineering attended the Health Awareness Day with the Rotary Club of Wednesfield alongside the Stroke Association at Boots the Chemist in Bentley Bridge.

Shoppers were invited to take part in the health screening which also included two General Practitioners (GPs) and a nurse associated with the club.

A total of 143 people had their blood pressure checked and received basic health screening.

Dr Morrisey said:  “High blood pressure usually has no symptoms but left untreated, it can lead to major problems later such as heart failure, kidney failure and strokes.

“At this community engagement event, several people were identified with health issues that would benefit from further medical investigation which included two undiagnosed cases of atrial fibrillation – another heart problem that often produces no, or minimal, symptoms.

“In total, five people were recommended to see their own doctor within 7 days and 36 were advised to visit their GP in the next month.”

The group also gave advice on body weight, mental health issues and smoking cessation as well as handing out promotional leaflets to people who did not stop for testing but took information away with them.

Anyone interested in studying Pharmacy should register for the next Open Day on Saturday 16th June 2018.
