University football team joins football pyramid

The University of Wolverhampton men’s football team has taken its first step towards the Premier League by entering a team into the football pyramid.

The team already plays in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition but from next season it will also enter a team into the Total Motion Midlands Football League.

Known as WLV Football FC the team will be made up of staff and students at the University and will play in the league’s third division.

The league is the 12th tier of the national football pyramid and is seven tiers away from the National League.

Martin Longworth, Lecturer in Sports Coaching and Performance and First Team Head Coach, said: “This programme is a clear statement of intent from the University and our commitment to both student sport and the student experience.

“We don’t want to just create good footballers; we want to create a student-athlete culture, where the students’ studies and football work in unison to allow them to thrive both on and off the pitch. This is our inaugural season and we have an opportunity to put WLV Football in the spotlight locally and nationally, it is a very exciting prospect and I’m relishing the role.”

Kyle Wainwright, who studies BSc Sports Coaching Practice (Football) and is team captain, said: “"After the success of last year's BUCS league winners, being accepted into the Midland Football league is an exciting prospect for all of the University's footballers.

“We are all really positive about what we are trying to achieve and with a full time programme available to the players it's a perfect chance to develop our skills on the pitch and create a team bond off it.”

The team is based at the University’s Walsall Campus and starts pre-season on Monday 9th July at 5pm.
