Students scoop international award for a one-handed design

08/01/2018

Students from the University of Wolverhampton scooped an international award for innovation recently.

Six students studying for an Interior Design and Product Design degree course in the Wolverhampton School of Art took part in a “24 hours of Innovation” event run by Ecole Superieure Des Technologies Industrielles Avances (ESTIA) in France.

The competition, now in its 10th year, hosted over 1,000 visitors with 42 local design teams competing in Biarritz and 12 international teams from around the world.

The winning team received 1000 Euros for their inclusive design solution for ‘One Hand Cooking’.  Their ‘Chop Box’ was designed to make chopping, peeling and grating easier for people with one hand.  Max Holder, Interior Design student, said:  “Our product was specifically designed with one-handed cooking in mind.  We took into account weight, dexterity, hygiene and grip but also wanted to create something which was aesthetically pleasing and available in a variety of colours.”

David Henley, Course Leader in Product Design at the University, said:  “This event sets a challenge to create innovation within a 24 hour period.  The main objective is to create new and innovative concepts, products and services based on themes and subjects proposed by companies, laboratories and creators.

“The Design department in the Wolverhampton School of Art has taken part in the competition for the past 6 years and we’ve been successful in 4 of the competitions – proving that the calibre of students studying on our degree courses is extremely high.”

A mixture of 25 current and former students in total took part and five projects were submitted within the 24 hour timescale.  The projects were researched, designed and communicated via a presentation video on YouTube.

The winning team was made of up of students: Sadie Millermaggs, Max Holder (Interior Design Level 4), Emily Rawlings, Josefa Fontiveros-Arazola, Roseheith Mair (Product Design Level 4) and Ben Rose (Product Design Level 5).

Anyone interested in studying Product or Interior Design should visit the next Open Day on Saturday 17th February 2018.
