Engineering graduate zooms into dream career

27/06/2017

A University of Wolverhampton graduate has raced ahead of the competition to secure a job with the world famous Morgan Motor Company in Malvern.

Will Blackburn gained valuable industry experience working on the University of Wolverhampton Racing (UWR) team which competes in professional motorsport championships.

After graduating with a first class BEng in Mechanical Engineering, the 24-year-old is putting the skills learnt with the team to good use as Design Engineer with the independent British motor manufacturer.

Will, from Wolverhampton, says he uses the knowledge and experience he gained working on the UWR team, based at the Telford Innovation Campus, on a daily basis in his role at Morgan.

He said: “Working for Morgan is an absolute privilege and I’m grateful to be part of the team, where every day brings new and exciting challenges to the table.

“Being part of the UWR team for the last three years has helped me gain experience in the motorsport industry and the necessary hands on skills to back my BEng in Mechanical engineering. This experience gained during my time with the UWR team is now constantly being used on a daily basis at Morgan Motor Company.

“Alongside studying at the University of Wolverhampton I have gained a variety of certifications in CAD through working as an Applications Engineer and technical support to the engineering community. These skills were used throughout the three years on the UWR team and are now being used daily at Morgan Motor Company in the form of reverse engineering and design for manufacture.”

Will has maintained his close links with the UWR team by working as chief engineer on the University’s Morgan Plus 4 Babydoll which competes in the AR Morgan Challenge.

Will is currently completing a part-time Masters in Advanced Technology Management (Manufacturing) at the University.

“During my Bachelors and Masters degrees at the University of Wolverhampton I have had continuous support from my lecturers in gaining the skills required for my position at Morgan Motor Company,” he adds.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Oakes, said: “We are delighted that Will has been able to secure such an exciting role with the world famous Morgan Motor Company. Through our partnership with the company, our students work alongside the Morgan craftsmen and women to gain hugely valuable work experience of the motor manufacturing industry. This focus on real world experience alongside engineering theory is truly paying dividends as 100% of the UWR race team have gone to secure employment after graduating.”

An investment of £10 million in the University’s engineering facilities at its Telford Innovation Campus in Priorslee has recently been completed, creating world class education facilities for engineering students including industry standard design, development and testing facilities.

There are Motorsport workshops which are home to two Morgan cars, a Plus 4 Babydoll and ARV6, and single seater race cars (Formula 3, Formula Renault, IMechE Formula Student and a Formula 300 Gould race car which is raced in the British Hillclimb Championship by Graham Wynn OBE).
