International flavour for students celebrating Chinese New Year

27/01/2017

The University of Wolverhampton Chinese Students & Scholars Society celebrated the start of Chinese New Year at the City Campus in Wolverhampton.

Chinese New Year starts on Saturday 28th January with celebrations taking place all over the world to mark the start of a new year characterised by one of 12 animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac; the Rooster is the tenth animal in the cycle.

Staff and students enjoyed a programme of events including listening to traditional instruments and pop music, a performance of Chinese Kung-Fu as well as being served Chinese food and playing traditional games.

Catering and Hospitality Services also offered a Chinese New Year menu across all campuses in the main dining areas and there are also Chinese New Year celebratory lanterns across the Courtyard at City Campus in Wolverhampton.

Weiju Zhou, President of the Chinese Students & Scholars Society at the University of Wolverhampton, said:  “The Students’ Union supported us to have a Chinese celebration to showcase how international the university is and to offer staff and students the opportunity to experience Chinese culture.”

Ellie Lodge-Chilton, Society Support Co-ordinator for Wolverhampton Students’ Union, said: “We’re a very inclusive University and we’ve got people studying here from every walk of life.  It’s just great to see such a fantastic event organised by our own students which showcases our diversity and gives everyone a flavour of the celebrations taking place for Chinese New Year.”
