National role for learning disabilities student

27/10/2016

A University of Wolverhampton student will be influencing Government policies around learning disabilities as part of a national steering group.

Elizabeth Bailey has been chosen as the England student representative on the Strengthening the Commitment steering group, a review to modernise UK learning disability nursing.

The 27-year-old is in her second year of a B(Nurs) Learning Disability Nursing degree at the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing.

Elizabeth had her first meeting in the role on Monday, when she attended a meeting in Whitehall with Ben Thomas, Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Dementia Professional Officer at the Department of Health, and others to discuss this UK wide strategy.

Elizabeth, from Welshpool, Powys, said: “I am very proud and honoured to have been chosen from all of the applications to be part of the Strengthening the Commitment steering group. I feel that I will learn a great amount from this opportunity and it will be a great privilege to influence policies that will improve the service provided to people with a learning disability."

She will hold the post for two years.
