Prestigious event celebrates a healthy outlook for the future

The University of Wolverhampton celebrated its achievements in healthcare at a House of Lords reception recently.

Nearly 200 students, staff and guests including local politicians, healthcare providers, partners and clinical and medical researchers, attended the event in London which was hosted by the Rt. Hon Lord Paul of Marylebone, PC, Chancellor at the University.

The University’s Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing is made up of institutes specialising in education, health, sport, psychology, public health, social work and care and offers a wide range of programmes from foundation and undergraduate degrees through to Masters, professional doctorates and research degrees.

Professor Geoff Layer, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wolverhampton, said:  “It’s wonderful to be able to celebrate our collective achievements at this very special venue. As one of the leading healthcare education providers in the region, we are educating and training the region’s nurses, midwives, health visitors, paramedics, pharmacists and all manner of related medical and healthcare professionals.

“We pride ourselves on our partnerships and work closely with the NHS, various health and hospital trusts as well as care and patient groups and we are proud of the contribution our students and graduates make to the wellbeing of the region and the country.”

Student Paramedic, Ayesha Bal, 27 from Wolverhampton, said: “The support on offer at the University is great and the faculties are very welcoming.  The unique partnership with West Midlands Ambulance Service means that the work placements are very accommodating.

The University celebrates its achievements and partnerships in health care at the House of Lords.

“It’s a huge challenge and commitment to be self-funded as well as juggling learning with normal, family life but I feel like I will achieve my ambition to become a healthcare professional.”

The University of Wolverhampton has contributed to over 11% of the national growth required for health visiting across 10 NHS Trusts in the West Midlands.  It also contributes through a wide range of health-related research into brain tumours, cancer, diabetes, as well as sport and exercise and wider health and wellbeing issues.
