Telford pupils get a taste of life in the fast lane
Year 8 pupils from Holy Trinity Academy in Telford recently enjoyed a taster of University life, when they took a trip to the University of Wolverhampton’s Telford Innovation Campus.
As part of an introduction to higher education, students from the academy were taken on a tour of the campus’ facilities and visited typical student accommodation; allowing them to get a true experience of what life is like at University.
Pupils were also given the opportunity to sit in the University’s School of Engineering Race Teams (UWR) Formula Renault car, which was used for the 2015 racing season.
As well as the tour, students were able to meet UWR and pro-driver Shane Kelly and the racing crew, who aided the pupils in changing a tyre and drawing designs for a new car for a competition the team were supporting.
The event was held as part of ‘Explore University’, which is led by the University of Wolverhampton in collaboration with Harper Adams, Keele and Staffordshire Universities, as well as Telford College of Arts and Technology.
The aim of the Explore University Network is to provide a single point of contact for teachers and advisers to find out about higher education outreach activity in their local area.
Ian Hart, Head of Access and Outreach for the University of Wolverhampton said: “We work with schools and colleges to help their pupils experience first-hand the exciting learning opportunities at the University.
“This encourages pupils to think about possible careers and the subjects they need to study and also provides a fantastic learning experience. They also get to meet students, graduates and staff, and just have a really good time.”
