Students raise bags of cash for charity whilst helping save the planet

University students and halls residents from Wolverhampton have raised thousands of pounds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) by donating hundreds of bags full of unwanted items.

Students from the University of Wolverhampton provided clothing, shoes, bedding and miscellaneous items which have gone on to be worth over £6,000 for the charity.

The majority of the bags were deposited in dedicated British Heart Foundation bins found around the halls complexes, but some were also brought in directly to the University’s Students’ Union, situated within the Ambika Paul Building.

The total value of the bags donated was £6,300, with the fundraising activity not only aiding BHF, but also having the added benefit of reduced environmental wastage.

Trish Mcgloin, Environment & Services Manager at the University said: “I think it is brilliant to see how generous students are in donating goods to worthy causes, the money raised is a fantastic amount and will go on to do a lot of good for the charity.

“As for the environmental benefit of recycling the donated items that should not be underestimated. Not only do the items go on to gain a new lease of life and have a prolonged life, the fact that we have less waste also means less harmful gases for the planet – which is nothing but a good thing.”

This is the fourth successive year the University of Wolverhampton has been involved in the BHF pack for Good campaign and they are now developing a further campaign to encourage staff to bring in unwanted goods as part of the University’s Green Week.

Green Week, which aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the environment and the ways in which people can save money whilst helping to save the planet, involves numerous events and activities for both students and staff.

On Tuesday 15 March, staff will have the opportunity to test drive the Nissan Leaf electric car from the Courtyard at the University’s City Centre Campus, 11am until 3pm.

In addition, Dr Bike will also be in the Courtyard from 12pm until 2pm, offering handy bike maintenance tips.
