Former pub becomes apprenticeship hub

As part of the University of Wolverhampton’s commitment to economic growth through providing training, work experience and work based opportunities for students, the former Feathers Public House on Molineux Street is all set to be transformed into an Apprenticeship Hub.

Work has recently started on the £500,000 project, which includes funding of over £200,000 from the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), with an official opening planned for the summer. This is part of the University’s ambitious Our Vision: Your Opportunity strategy which will see £250 million investment over 5 years in economic growth.

Geoff Layer, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “The government is committed to providing three million apprenticeships during this parliament – the majority of which will be higher level skills with a requirement that courses meet the skills needs identified within each region.

“Degree apprenticeships can be achieved where the qualifications include an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. The University will offer technical and professional higher and degree apprenticeships as well as progression from intermediate and advanced apprenticeships – thus seeking to close the skills gap that many employers face.”

The new Apprenticeship Hub will provide a bespoke and independent venue which will be the University’s focal point for potential apprentices, employers and learning providers, offering clear and integrated progression routes for vocational pathways from Levels 2 - 3 to higher apprenticeships at Levels 4 and 5 and to degree apprenticeships at Levels 6 and 7. To complement the new course offer, apprenticeships will also be offered within the University as part of its staff development programme.

The University’s first Higher Apprenticeship has already started and is delivered through a Foundation Degree (Science) in Built Environment by the Faculty of Science and Engineering leading to a Higher Apprenticeship in Construction Management delivered in partnership with Wolverhampton Homes, Wakes Construction, Burrows Construction, United Living and EDF Energy.
