SMILE sporting events talent-spots Paralympians of the future
The University of Wolverhampton played host to two events recently designed to talent-spot future Paralympic hopefuls.
Around 250 young people with special educational needs and disability from mainstream and special schools across the Black Country took part in the two SMILE events at the University’s Walsall Campus.
The University’s Faculty of Education, Health & Wellbeing sponsored the events for the seventh year running and provided staff, equipment and facilities to enable the primary and secondary school children to take part in a range of activities including wheelchair basketball, football and goalball, tag rugby, judo, cardio tennis, cricket, athletics, cheerleading, new age bowls, curling and seated volleyball.
The events were organised in partnership with Black Country Schools Sports Partnerships and Wolverhampton PASS (Partnership and School Sport).
Dot Heslop, Senior Lecturer and Pathway Leader for Secondary PE & Special Educational Needs and Disability Inclusive ITE at the University, said: “The focus of the competitive events is to identify potential talented performers with the aim of signposting them for selection for borough or city representation at county athlete assessment days and ultimately national talent camps.
“The partnership with Black Country Schools Sports has enabled University trainee teachers to get involved in promoting, planning and delivering the activities, using their expertise whilst further developing their skills in inclusive practice and success for all.”
Around 60 sports leaders from St. Matthias Academy, Northern House, Westcroft School and Pennfields School facilitated the events supported by the University’s specialist Physical Education Initial Teacher Education trainee teachers. Teacher Trainees from other subject areas and students from across the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing also supported the pupils throughout the day.
