MP visit highlights importance of brain tumour research

Rob Marris, Labour MP for Wolverhampton South West, recently visited the Cancer Research Group at the University of Wolverhampton to find out more about their research into brain tumours.

Touring the laboratories to view the work of researchers and academics in the new state-of-the-art Rosalind Franklin Building at City Campus, Rob also met Giovanna Cooper who had undertaken fundraising for brain tumour research and presented a cheque to the Group for their research work.

Giovanna said: "My sister was diagnosed with a brain tumour while she and I were working at the University of Wolverhampton. She lived for four years after diagnosis, after having two operations to remove the tumour. A few years later a colleague from the University I had worked with, Harry Lance, also died of a brain tumour.

"This is when I heard about the research at the University and a report on the radio by a man who had a brain tumour describing his treatment. It was the same as his (deceased) father and my sister and that treatment had not moved on in over 20 years. That's when I decided I wanted to do something to raise the profile and funds for brain tumour research."

Giovanna undertook a half marathon in Bournemouth, raising £662 (plus gift aid) in total for brain tumour research.
