New prize granted for playwriting competition

A new playwriting prize has been launched that will award the winning show a professional production and international tour. The University of Wolverhampton’s Arena Theatre has received a grant to work in partnership with three other institutions across Europe in Italy, Romania and Spain to promote new work in theatre.

The Playwriting Award for POP Drama competition is open to multiple entries from anyone who wants to turn their hand to playwriting.

Arena Theatre secures EU funding for playwriting competition.

Neil Reading, Manager at the Arena Theatre, said: “The winner of the Pop Drama Award will have their play produced professionally at the University of Wolverhampton's Arena Theatre in its 2017/18 season with the potential for it to be developed into a full-scale production that will tour Italy, Romania and Spain, alongside the publication of the play in those three languages.

“Though entered plays may cover any subject, its organisers are particularly interested in ‘the contradiction between human nature and morality’ and ‘issues relating to social exclusion’.”

The £150,000 grant, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, will see the Centro Diego Fabbri in Italy, Universitatea de Arte Din Targu-Mures in Romania and Fundacion CajaGranada in Spain working with the University of Wolverhampton’s Faculty of Arts who will deliver the English section of the award.

Writers can submit more than one play, though entries must be original and unpublished. The deadline for applications, which are anonymous, is 31st March 2016. Full submission details can be found here: https://popdramawlv.wordpress.com/
