Employability event showcases new Business School

University of Wolverhampton students found that the new £18 million flagship Business School was just the job when they attended an employability event in the brand new building recently.

Over 100 students from a range of subject areas including Business, Law and Social Sciences visited the Employability Showcase Event where staff from Handelsbanken and Irwin Mitchell solicitors were on hand to deliver workshops; and other businesses as well as local entrepreneurs were offering advice and guidance on how to impress potential employers.

Talks included writing job applications, how to perform at interviews and how to develop ‘soft’ skills. Employers emphasised the importance of gaining voluntary and workplace experience in addition to performing well academically.

Miceál Barden, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, said: “There are lots of additional opportunities on offer for students studying at the University of Wolverhampton including placements, both in the UK and overseas, and mentoring schemes.  We also work with many volunteer organisations such as the Wolverhampton Law Advice Centre and Wolverhampton Legal Companions which offer work experience placements.

“We were delighted at how successful the event was. It proved to be a wonderful opportunity for students to meet employers and understand the steps they can take to make themselves more employable.”

Throughout the day, students and graduates could also access advice from the CV Clinic, where careers advisors were on hand offering advice on CVs, application forms, and career planning in general.
