Inspirational lecturer scoops national teaching award

An inspirational University of Wolverhampton lecturer has received a prestigious national award recognising excellence in teaching.

Dr Sarah Sherwin, has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship (NTF) by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

‌Sarah is Acting Principal Lecturer/Head of Community Practice at the University’s Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing and one of 55 new NTFs announced today.

A National Teaching Fellowship is the most prestigious individual award for excellence in teaching in higher education.

Successful nominees were nominated by their institutions and submissions had to show evidence of three criteria: individual excellence, raising the profile of excellence and developing excellence.

Dr Sarah Sherwin said: “I’m delighted and surprised, and feel really honoured to be nominated by the University and then to have been selected by the Higher Education Academy for this award. I feel that I am just one of many like-minded lecturers here who are committed and passionate about delivering high quality teaching for our students.

 “It will provide a really exciting opportunity to continue enhancing learning and teaching at the University of Wolverhampton and explore some really innovative ways of teaching.”

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Dr Anthea Gregory said: “The University is incredibly proud of Sarah for winning this national award in recognition of excellence in teaching. We are committed to putting our students first by creating outstanding learning opportunities and this award recognises Sarah’s significant achievements in providing an innovative teaching experience for her students.”

Following a career as a community nurse specialising in school nursing, Sarah Sherwin moved to work within higher education. She has extensive experience as the course leader for Specialist Community Public Health Nursing School Nursing, and is involved in delivering a range of modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.  Sarah is committed to delivering teaching in innovative ways to inspire and actively engage students in their own learning and development.

In 2015 Sarah was voted Inspirational Lecturer of the Year by students at the University of Wolverhampton.

The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) celebrates excellent practice and outstanding achievement in learning and teaching in higher education. The awards support individuals’ professional development in learning and teaching.
