Students go further with £1.2 million travel fund assistance

12/08/2016

The University of Wolverhampton has announced a £1.2 million fund to support students with the costs of travel.

Following the announcement by the government to withdraw access to Maintenance Grants for some students and replace these with loans, the University has pledged to provide additional support for students in the form of a travel fund to the value of £300 to help with the costs of travelling to and from the University and to work placements.

Jon Elsmore, Dean of Students at the University of Wolverhampton, said:  “Students tell us that travel is an essential expenditure when studying so we have worked with travel partners across the region to try to alleviate some of the costs incurred.

“We are aiming to cover the cost of bus, metro and train travel within the Network West Midlands region in the form of a travel pass to the value of £300 which students can then top-up or extend themselves to other regions outside of the West Midlands.

“In some instances, we may be able to provide alternative assistance in other ways, for example, some students may be able to trade in their travel pass for the equivalent discount off their accommodation fees.”

The £300 travel award will be offered to eligible, new, full time UK entrants on an undergraduate programme where the course is studied at a University of Wolverhampton Campus commencing in September 2016. This includes Foundation degrees and HNC/D where studied full time, and based at a University Campus. To qualify students must be fully enrolled by the end of October 2016.

The Travel Fund is only available for the 2016/17 academic year and International/EU students are not eligible. Find out more information on the Travel Fund web page.
