University sports team silverware success
University of Wolverhampton sports teams are celebrating after a season in which four of them won their respective leagues.
Women’s Football, Men’s Basketball, Men’s Volleyball and Women’s Volleyball all took league titles in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) championships and were promoted.
Women’s football went one better also taking the conference cup, beating Lincoln 4-2 in the final and completing the league and cup double.
Bess Evans, Deputy Director for Sport at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “It has been a fantastic season for our teams with four of them winning their leagues. We’re really proud of how they’ve competed this year.
“We entered 24 teams in all competitions across a range of sports so to come away with five trophies is a great achievement.
“Women’s football once again followed up their success of last year winning the league and cup double and were unbeaten throughout the season and Men’s basketball had a fantastic record of winning all ten of the league matches they played.
“Last year saw our most successful team performance in the BUCS championships and this year we have further improved on that. The more we can improve performance and rankings the more it’ll boost the reputation of the University for sport.
“It is what sporting students look for – they want to go somewhere which has good teams, facilities and coaching.”
Team success has followed on from strong individual performances this year which have also included medals and strong performance at the BUCS Indoor championships for judo, athletics and swimming.
