Clearing calls to University increase

14/08/2014

By 10am on Thursday (14 Aug), more than 1,300 applicants had called the University’s Clearing hotline – an increase of about 30% on last year.

By 2pm, the University had received 3,100 calls, which was also ahead of last year.

There are 800 places available at the University through Clearing on a range of courses and interest from applicants has been across the subject areas.

From 7am on Thursday, more than 70 University staff were on hand to staff the phone lines.

Paul Travill, Academic Registrar for the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We had been expecting a high volume of calls and have more staff than ever available to speak to prospective students.

“We have vacancies in many of our subject areas, and calls are particularly busy for our science and engineering subjects. This coincides with the opening of our new £21m Science Centre this academic year.”

The Clearing phone lines on 0800 953 3222 are open until 7pm on Thursday, 6pm tomorrow (Fri) and 4pm on Saturday.

The University Open Day will take place at both Wolverhampton and Walsall Campuses on Saturday 16 August from 10am to 3pm.

Experts are also available at the University’s advice and information centres, The Gateway@The George in Wolverhampton and at Shire Hall in Stafford.

Top tips for Clearing:

  • Don’t panic – there are opportunities available
  • Get advice – from your school or college, and also from the University of Wolverhampton’s expert team of advisors.
  • Be prepared - think of the questions you want to ask when you ring universities and have your grades handy. Be open-minded about the types of course you could study and if you can't get on an undergraduate course, you could consider other study options such as Foundation programmes or part-time.
  • Keep in touch - if we offer you a place, we'll tell you by when we need you to make a decision. Places do go quickly though, so keep in touch. Come and visit us on our Open Day on Saturday 16 August to get a feel for the University and to talk to us to help you make your decision.
