New links forged with Warwickshire Police

The University of Wolverhampton has joined forces with Warwickshire Police to offer practical experience for students on a degree course.

Students on the BSc (Hons) Policing are able to combine academic study and work placements to provide a solid foundation for a professional career in the police and related occupations.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Ann Holmes recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Chief Constable of Warwickshire Police Andy Parker.

Students on the Policing degree will benefit from the opportunity to gain real experience of the work of Warwickshire Police as Special Constables.

Course leader Dr Martin Wright said: "This new agreement provides an excellent opportunity for our students to gain practical experience alongside Warwickshire Police. Work placements are a valuable part of the BSc (Hons) Policing, enhancing and enriching the academic aspects of the course.

Warwickshire Police Chief Constable, Andy Parker, said, "This is a very forward thinking idea, offering students first hand experience of policing, while also benefiting the community through their work as volunteer police officers.

“By developing their skills in policing they will have an opportunity to develop keys skills and knowledge which they will find invaluable in whatever career they choose to follow, whether that be in law and enforcement or in other fields. We welcome this initiative and look forward to working with the University of Wolverhampton and the students."

The new agreement builds on the University's existing partnerships with West Midlands Police, Staffordshire Police, West Mercia Police, the British Transport Police, the Royal Military Police, Territorial Army.

Students are taught law and criminology at the School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications, mental health concepts at the , management and leadership skills at the Business School and forensic science using the School of Applied Sciences state-of-the-art labs.

At the culmination of their degree course students complete a research project based around their minimum two years of Special Constabulary service.
