New Research Dean announced

The University of Wolverhampton has appointed a new Dean of Research.

Professor John Darling has taken up the post having previously been the Dean of the School of Applied Sciences at the University.

Professor John darlingThe new role, which started this month, will see Professor Darling oversee and implement the University’s research strategy.

Professor Darling said: “It is an exciting time to be taking up this post. We have already built up an excellent reputation as a University that produces ground breaking and innovative research.

“It is now my job that this continues and grows and to help create a rich environment in which our research community can thrive.”

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer, said: “We are delighted to have appointed John to this role.

“He has a wealth of experience and has been at the forefront of our research development over a number of years. “It is an important time for universities in terms of developing their research and I am sure John will do an excellent job in helping us shape and deliver it.”

Professor Darling joined the University of Wolverhampton in 2001 as a Professor of Biomedical Science after 23 years at the Institute for Neurology at University College London.

In 2003 he was appointed the founder Director of the University’s Research Institute in Healthcare Sciences and in July 2008 he also took over as the Dean of the School of Applied Sciences.

He is a leading figure in the field of brain tumour research, pioneering new discoveries in the fight against cancer and co-directs with Dr Tracy Warr the Brain Tumour UK Neuro-oncology Research Centre, which is based at the University of Wolverhampton.

He has a PhD in Pathology from the University of London, an MSc in Virology from the University of Reading and a BSc in Microbiology from the University of Kent.

Professor Darling is a Fellow of the Institute of Biology, an Honorary Professor of Medical Sciences at the Hebei Union University in Tangshan, China and an Honorary Professor at the Institute of Pathology and Southwest Cancer Centre in Chongqing, China.
