University to host International Festival

The University’s International Centre is hosting a range of activities for staff and students at the Wolverhampton and Walsall Campuses from 13 to 15 April 2011.

Olympiad Day will be held at the Walsall Campus on Thursday, 14 April 2011 from 10am to 4.30pm. Around 16 different sports from American baseball to judo will be on offer including individual events, team sports and fun activities, and there will even be a closing ceremony with awards for the winners.

This event will include tasters and demonstrations and is managed by School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure students as part of their project work.

Peter Robinson, Principal Lecturer and Head of Leisure Industries, said: "This is an excellent opportunity for our students to deliver a high profile event, and an invaluable opportunity to gain valuable work experience alongside their studies."

Friday, 15 April 2011 will be Cultural Day at the Wolverhampton City Campus, with students from 15 countries or regions showcasing their cultures. This will include displays of dance and music, ranging from Bollywood and Chinese to Indonesian, African and Morris dancing.

The first day of the festival. Wednesday 13 April 2011, is titled Celebrating Difference Day and will include an opening ceremony and a showing of the film Three Idiots, which focuses on the educational system in India. There will also be a Bollywood workshop and tabla musical performance in the Student Union from 6pm to 8pm.

There will also be a student photography competition themed around ‘my trips around the UK’, and a prize will be awarded to the winning student.

Jo Gittens, Director International, said: "After the success of last year's International Festival, we are extending this years event to three days of activities that will showcase the diverse culture and talents of our university community. I am sure it will be an event to be proud of."

The opening of the festival will be supported by the School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications and the Students’ Union has also been involved in the organisation of the event.
