Renowned artist exhibiting at University

11/03/2008

Frank Bowling’s ‘Big Paintings’ exhibition is open to the public from Thursday (MAR13). It features works of up to 12ft wide and reflects his fascination with colour, composition and scale. An image of a painting that will celebrate a artists lifetime achievement. This was displayed in a new exhibition at the university of wolverhampton.

Frank Bowling will be launching the exhibition with an exclusive Conversation with the Artist session, explaining the inspiration behind his work.

The pioneering artist, who divides his time between London and New York, was born in 1936 in Guyana, which means ‘place of water’, and his artwork is often themed around water. He trained in Britain, winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. In 2005, he became the first black artist elected to the Royal Academy in its 200-year history.

His work is represented in over 30 collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Royal College of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 1987, he became the first black British artist to have a piece purchased by the Tate Gallery.

Last year, the University of Wolverhampton awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts to Frank Bowling in recognition of his outstanding contribution to painting and the arts.

Su Fahy, Head of Fine Art and Photography at the University’s School of Art & Design, said: “We are delighted to have this exhibition of Frank Bowling’s ‘Big Paintings’ and to engage in a conversation with the artist about the context of the works.”

The exhibition will be in the University’s Gallery on the 3rd floor of the Millennium City Building from 10am to 4pm from March 12-19.  It will then re-open on March 31 until April 4

A Conversation with the Artist will take place at 4.30 pm on Thursday (MAR13) in room MC001 on the ground floor
