Award for work on University building

14/07/2008

The Administration & Teaching Building, in Camp Street, City Campus North, was officially opened by Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown last year.

Scott Wilson, the international multi-disciplinary consultancy group, received the Public Sector/Civic Project Award at the recent Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Midland Counties Branch Annual.

The company’s Building Structures Team, based in Birmingham, completed, provided full civil and structural engineering design and detailing services for the building.

The new building consolidates a significant amount of administration and teaching space onto a single site.

The concept developed was to create a building of simple design that made optimum economic use of the slope of the site and at the same time being flexible enough to accommodate the two distinct types of occupants for the building and to have clear segregation of the office and teaching facilities.

Martin Baugh, Projects Director for Buildings & Infrastructure at Scott Wilson, said: "We are very excited to have received this award. The final design of the building resulted from some interesting challenges posed by the site and intended use of the space. The completed building is a simple, yet visually pleasing, response to the brief."

The award presentation was made by the President of IStructE, Sarah Buck to Scott Wilson at the IStructE Midland Counties Branch Centenary dinner on June 12 2008 at the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham.
