Chancellor

 

The Honorary position of Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton was created following the grant of University title in 1992.

The first Chancellor was the Earl of Shrewsbury, from 1992 to 1998.

The Rt Hon Lord Paul of Marylebone, PC has been Chancellor of the University since 1999.

The role of Chancellor is as a figurehead of the institution; to preside over the University's ceremonial occasions and to act as Ambassador of the University.

Lord Paul, Chairman of Caparo Group, is a leading businessman and an active member of the House of Lords. Born in Jalandhar, India in 1931, he was educated at Punjab University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

Lord Paul came to the UK in 1966 and in 1968 founded Caparo Group, the UK based industrial company with operations in Europe, Asia and North America. He was raised to the Peerage as Baron Paul of Marylebone in August 1996.

He was member of the London Development Agency from 2000-2008 and from 2005-2008 chaired the LDA Olympics Delivery Committee which was responsible for delivering the land and infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympic Games on time and on budget. He was also on the board of London 2012 and a member of the British Olympic Association Advisory Board.

Lord Paul holds 15 honorary degrees from across Academe in recognition of his contributions to business, the economy and his social and charitable works. He co-chaired the India-UK Round Table 2000-2005, and was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1983.

In July 2009 he was appointed as a member of the Privy Council by the Queen, with his full title becoming The Rt Hon Lord Paul of Marylebone.
