Health and fitness fan, Dr Josh Johnson, was born in Hanover, Jamaica and at the age of 16 years old he came to live with his parents in 1966 in Wolverhampton. He trained to be a welding engineer at the then Wulfrun College (now City College) and Wolverhampton Technical College (now University of Wolverhampton). He worked as an engineer until 1983 and then moved on to work for the Local Authority as a Recreation Centre Manager until 1999, when he took early retirement. Josh is a keen golfer, he marshals many English golf tournaments around the country. Josh is the English Karate National Coach, the Chief Head Coach to the Elite Karate Association and to the J.J. Karate Academy based in Wolverhampton.  In 2011 Josh was indicted into the UK Combat Martial Arts Hall of Fame. Josh is Vice-Chair/Nation Karate Coach to the Federation of English Karate Organisations (FEKO) which has over 18,000 members in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Josh has worked in partnership with many organisations. He has been an active community member of several of Wolverhampton Council's Local Neighbourhood Partnerships and local community groups across the City for over 40 years. This experience has helped him to understand, communicate and participate in various levels of meetings. In 2011 he became patron of the Moreland Trust, Wolverhampton, who are providers of care in the community for the elderly and vulnerable people. Josh is the Chair of the Hanover and Wolverhampton Link Organisation Project (HWLOP); one of their main aims is to link schools in Wolverhampton with schools in Hanover, Jamaica to undertake collaborative work. Josh was a member of the University’s governing body from 2006-2015 and is a nominated member of the joint Equality and Diversity Committee where he continues to contribute his experience and expertise in shaping a fair and equitable future for students. 

In 2019, Josh was awarded the MBE for services to sport and the local community.
