We have joined the Higher Education Carbon Management programme (HECM), run by the Carbon Trust, and made a commitment to reduce our CO2 emissions by 25% (against 2007/2008 levels) by 2015.
The Carbon Management Plan
Our aim is to reduce the impact we have on the environment through the energy and resources we consume and the waste products we produce.
To help fulfill this aim the carbon management programme was developed in partnership with the Carbon Trust, as part of its phase 5 Higher Education Carbon Management (HECM) Programme.
There are many drivers that have contributed to our decision to participate in the Higher Education Carbon Management Programme. The principal driver for participation is to reduce the environmental impact of our day to day operations and activities.
What we want to do
- Become a leading partner within the local community in reducing carbon emissions.
- Reduce our carbon footprint by 25% against 2007/08 baseline over the next five years.
- Reduce the our environmental impact, specifically in the areas of: energy usage; travel and transport; waste and construction and design; i.e. waste minimisation.
- Improve awareness of staff, students and visitors of the costs and environmental impact of carbon emissions across the whole of the University.
