James Phillips - BA (Hons) Photography

James Phillips, who will graduate in September 2016 with a First Class Honours Degree in BA (Hons) Photography, credits his experience at the University of Wolverhampton with helping him to secure full-time employment so soon as a studio/in-house photographer for Cousins Furniture.

"The course itself has helped me massively, not only to help build my confidence but also for my career path; particularly within the final year where the input from lecturers in the Creative Industries module helped me to research and outline a path of what I needed to do, in order to make my career a reality.

"I would definitely recommend the course to potential students, not only for the input from photography staff, both lecturers and technicians, but also for the facilities. The photography department is great for the availability of five different areas in the photography studio to work from, as well as darkrooms for both colour and monochrome photography, as well as a Mac suite with latest software."

During his final year, James went above and beyond during the Creative Industries module to really make his dreams of becoming a professional photographer a reality.

"I started off by producing business cards, and I then went to a variety of independently run restaurants, bistros etc., in towns or villages to hand them out. Eventually I met up with a handful of potential clients where I was able to show them my printed portfolio and I was successful in securing several commissions of work.

"Clients I have produced work for include:

  • The Birmingham & Midland Institute (BMI), Birmingham
  • Peepo Pizza, Bridgnorth
  • Graze, Bridgnorth
  • Bamboo Wine Bar and Bistro, Bridgnorth
  • Luscious Dessert Lounge, Wolverhampton
  • Grand Station, Wolverhampton

“My main success was for a popular dessert restaurant called the Little Dessert Shop. For this establishment, I was asked to photograph the whole of their new menu as well as images for promotional use in both print and online purposes. These images have also been featured in Wolverhampton magazine, which is distributed to 18,500 homes each year.  As well as this, I have also produced photographs for their famous cookie dough product, which they have recently launched in Asda stores, in particular, 118 stores across the UK.”

Congratulations to James, and good luck with the rest of your blossoming career!

Ryan Smith - BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Software Engineering)

"I originally worked whilst at college, but decided that in order to progress further within my chosen career I needed to gain a much deeper understanding within that topic.

"Having been born and bred in Wolverhampton, the University has always been on my radar. However, after looking at the facilities it has to offer I was confident that I had everything I needed to succeed on my course.

"One tutor in particular was always able to provide students with help when required, providing in-depth knowledge and background information that surpassed the requirements for a particular task but gave the students a much clearer insight into that topic.

"The course laid a good foundation from which I could transition into a job and begin to build an exciting career path. It prepared me well; technology is an ever-changing field and it’s difficult to constantly learn new programming languages and grasp new concepts. However, the underlying foundation that the University provided was taught well and has enabled me to pick-up these changes relatively quickly.

"Although it may seem difficult throughout the course, if you try hard and put the time in, you’ll get the results you want. It's a fun learning experience and I would recommended the course to others."
