Whatever time of day it is I’m
sure that one of those statements fits perfect.

Introduction

So here
I am and it’s the end of the Semester, or should I say Block 1? Ok
it’s the end of the semester and the end of Block 1. It has really
been a busy busy time. Work has been mega busy and I’ve been
working really hard on my Masters. I have made a really good effort
this time and stayed focused on what I wanted to do. Every Sunday
my lecturer posts our new topic online to Pebble Pad, and like a
true nerd, I’m logged in and eagerly reading the tasks before
trawling through my selection of airpower books and starting to jot
down some initial thoughts and feelings.

Pebble Pad

I like to try to make my first posting onto the Pebble Pad Blog
by Tuesday at the latest, so I usually do this on a Monday evening
after I’ve finished work. If you want a tip then stay focused and
make sure you allocate at least an hour each day for reading and
another hour for write-up and posting. One more tip, do your
write-up in a word document and then cut and paste it into the
Pebble Pad editor. Only one downside about Pebble Pad, I can’t use
my Ipad to access it as “IT DOESN’T HAVE FLASH!!!!!” (sorry about
the excessive use of exclamation marks)

Air Power Module

So a little more about this module I’ve been doing…… It’s Called
Air Power and it’s about air power (obviously) so we have been
looking at the definitions of it and the early uses and techniques,
strategies, theories used in air power throughout mainly the
twentieth century. I’ve had mixed pleasure with the weekly blogs as
this time round the rest of the people haven’t been as active as
last year’s group. But luckily for me there is one person on there
who makes a good contribution and we are able to engage with each
other’s posts and comments (so thank you). It really is about
peer-to-peer engagement and I really value this as a learning tool.
It’s really powerful to have this sort of interaction with the
other students on your course as it’s good to see something from a
different perspective and even have some of your ideas and thoughts
challenged. Especially as this is a 100% online module. I really
look forward to meeting the rest of the group on my future
modules.

Putting It All Together

So here’s
a little more about what I actually did…. The weekly blogs make up
25% of the total grade, I think it should be more, but hey. I made
sure that I made regular contributions to this and tried to post at
least three times. I only missed one week and that’s because I was
a way and with my Ipad. The second component was a Source Analysis.
I hate these, but in some ways I also love em. I think it’s because
I prefer to write an essay and look at different sources and bring
it all together. I guess the benefit of doing a source analysis is
that it can be about my personal thoughts so I’m able to adopt a
different writing style. Anyway, that was worth another 25%.
Finally the last component was a 3000 word essay. I once again get
to choose my question and once again I’m spoilt for choice. To cut
a long story short, I finally got it done and submitted. I did well
by writing a pretty comprehensive plan. I even stuck to it and gave
myself plenty of time to start it and get it finished. I even
managed to hit the word count exactly (allowing for my plus 10%)
so, now all I have to do is wait for the final results I’m keeping
my fingers crossed for a B overall. Let’s wait and see.

Thanks for reading and I will add a bit more personal info in
the next instalment.

semester. Welcome week has been and gone and wow! It has been
a busy and exciting time. Not just because of the free stuff
that the Students’ Union were giving out, or the variety of events
that they put on, but for the sheer buzz and excitement of the new
and returning students.

I think that we had around six thousand new
starters this past week, and even thou I work in the Students’
Union, I was also one of those returning students. I managed
to get myself enrolled onto evision and have now just got to select
my modules. I know what I’m doing already cus I met with my
module leader and discussed my options over the summer. The
nerd in me is really excited about getting myself back into the
library and ready to submerge myself under a pile of books for
another year.

So, this will be my second and final year on
my Masters course for Conflict Studies and then I will have the
summer for my dissertation. If you want to see how I cope with the
pressures of finding that balance between, Work. Social, Family,
Leisure and Sleep, then keep reading. I will be delivering you
a taste of all. I would very much like to make this an
interactive blog, so I welcome your feedback, comments and
suggestions. Feel free to email me or come over and see me at
the Students’ Union in MD building.

For now I would like to welcome you to my blog, welcome to the
university and welcome to my world. Now I need to rest my
weak legs and get some rest before my lectures start.

That’s the case of many people isn’t it? You gotta find a way
to pay for your fees and the cost of living somehow. So the balance
has been something of a task to get right. I find that as I
have lectures only on the weekend it allows me to focus on my work
Mon-Fri and ensure that I allocate the weekend to study. But
there are pitfalls. Getting that social life balance right,
keeping the family, friends and loved ones satisfied with the
amount of time you give to them. Luckily for me a lot of my
course is about self study and working online. So as long as I
remember to log on to Pebble Pad daily, I hit my minimum
requirements and meet all my assessment criteria and slowly make my
way towards successfully completing my course. But of course
the job takes up the bulk of my time.

Students' Union
As you know by now, I work
in the Students’ Union. I’ve spent most of May working on different
student issues, from attending NUS conferences like International
Students Conference and NUS Black Students Conference. These
are amazing places where I can really influence positive change in
the student movement. I get a chance to utilise the knowledge
and skills that I have gained whilst studying in both my undergrad
and current postgrad studies. So I’m proud to say that I’ve
written a handful of policy motions ranging from combating cultural
shock, increasing black representation in Higher Education, and
improved funding for all students. It’s a win-win-win for
students.

We won!!! Time to celebrate

I really am honoured to be the
President. Although I have no plans to run the country. But
I’ve really had lots of opportunities to get involved in the wider
workings of university and student life, whether that be in my role
as a Governor, a Trustee of the Union, judging the winners of the
upcoming Vice-Chancellor’s Staff Excellence Awards, or simply
arranging an end of year party for all you lovely
students. And the best thing is, I get another year to do it
all again. Perfect.

SU Council together one last time!

The summer months
The course has been
absolutely amazing. I have some really intelligent and
compassionate lecturers who are all experts in their
field. There really is no limit to their knowledge. (No
I’m not sucking up to boost my grades.) So after many months
of lectures and assignments and endless reading lists, I’m finally
at the point where I have a big task ahead of me for the summer.
It’s time to start the research side in preparation for my
dissertation, just a few thousand words to write up. It’s
awfully quiet around here now that teaching has officially ended
and exams are over. What’s that sound I hear? Oh it’s the
library calling me!

The library calls me

So I’m spending most of the next few months
preparing for the new academic year and Welcome Week which starts
this September. If you really want to know what’s happening,
check out our website www.wolvesunion.org or follow the
usual social network sites on facebook and twitter.

I really must thank you for taking the time to
read my blog. I hope it’s given you a little insight into the
life of a postgrad student and has given you a chance to experience
what is actually involved in it all. You’ve also had the
chance to learn a little bit about me and my personal and working
life. Thank you to those of you who have contacted me
personally and are now following me on twitter and facebook. I
really hope that this has been entertaining for you.

Even though this blog is now drawing to a
close, please feel free to ask me anything you want about student
life at the university.

of this that and the other.

THIS: Working on my assignments and exploring the world of Mass
Media Propaganda, utilising Pebble Pad to the fullest.

Pebblepad

THAT: My work in the Students’ Union, every day different, new and
exciting.
THE OTHER: Lots of fun, play and other exciting activities.
Read on for more details.

THE COURSE:

The course is going really well. I’m able
to find just the right balance between work and study. It’s
definitely about staying focused and strict to your
schedule. My tip is allocate a set day over the weekend
dedicated solely for study, reduce your T.V. intake (as in I don’t
watch any soaps, so I save my sanity and I save around four hours a
week.) The time you save not watching T.V. you can use this for
valuable reading time. So I’m looking forward to my next assignment
and will have an enjoyable (seriously) time doing my research for
my final project.

Work, work, work!

The JOB:

The job is also going fine. It’s been a
busy month. So busy I’ve not had a chance to stop and
blog. My time as the president has been full of lots of
exciting and different things. I will definitely miss this
when my term is over. The good news is (to cut a long story
short) I’ve just re run in the elections and I won by a comfortable
amount. So I’ve got another year to really cement things
in. This is perfect cus now I can really concentrate on the
new Walsall Union project and get on with an International Audit
for the NUS.

N.U.S. National Conference has also just
passed by and again this was a very enjoyable time that I shared
with others from the Union and University, Colin, Naveed and
Claire. There was supposed to be six of us but that’s another
story. Myself and two others (or me and two of the others-
yeah that’s how I’d speak it) got up on stage and spoke out on some
student policy motions. I was very happy that Liam Burns was
successfully elected as the new NUS President. I won’t bore
you with all the results but everyone I voted for got in. I’m
expecting a positive year ahead.

Electons Team

Conferences, conferences,
conferences!!! It’s conference season so pretty much most of
my weeks are filled with conferences. You can get your ‘learn
on’, catch up with other union officers, do the networking thing
and really get the latest info on what’s happening
nationally. Plus at certain ones you get a stack load of
freebies. I’m really looking forward to NUS Black Students’
Conference and NUS International Students’ Conference. I’ve
been working on some new policy motions to go to both NUS Campaigns
and they will bring positive change for all students. Good
Times.

THE PLAY:

The Kenny does sometimes get the play.
After Ken Harris is finished with talking about himself in the
third person, I like to do my usual workout in the gym and get my
sweat on. Not had much time for it lately, but I’ve been
trying to get to know my motorbike a bit better. Save money
and learn a few useful things at the same time. Brought myself
some new brake pads, well not for me but for the bike. Also
had to buy a new fuel hose cus it turns out the one on there is the
wrong type. I am now the mechanic of my own motorcycle, job
done. Well I’ve still gotta do the brake pads, but I did the first
part.

I’m still sifting through my leisure
activities but I have to say that cooking, is still up there in my
top four. Why a top four and not a top three? I hear you
ask. Well I’ll give you the full run down in the next blog,
but for now I will leave you with the thought of.........

Images

University of Wolverhampton postgraduate student blog entry

entered into March. It’s getting nearer and nearer to the end
of another semester. Time goes so fast. I’m glad that I
don’t watch TV, I’d never be able to keep up with the soaps, work
and study. Talking of which, my studies have unfortunately been
taking a bit of a back seat recently. Been so busy at work,
and my family life has been a little neglected to. Somehow you
have to try to get the balance right, I sometimes get it right, but
then other times I finish work, get home and then cook dinner and I
just can’t be bothered. I haven’t been to the gym in two
weeks! Shocking I know. But hey, not to worry. My
motto is “it’s never all that bad; you can always find a positive
in any negative”. On a positive note, I managed to get myself
a motorbike like I’ve been saying. Excellent, I can now start
saving money on my commute to work. I need to get used to the
chilled weather again though!

VISITS & TOURS

I spent most of last month on different tours
and visits to other students’ unions and colleges. I enjoyed a
visit to UEA Students’ Union and coupled this with a touch of
mentoring at a local event co-organised by an organisation called
Reach and a group called Future Projects. They mentor and
inspire your people to achieve more and break out of the restraints
of their stereotyped roles. (I think I summed that up well in
that little sentence) I think I’d definitely like to get more
involved in this area of work, but I’d like to utilise my knowledge
and experience in deafness and put my British Sign Language to
use. So in the essence of all this, I’ve been over to
Stourbridge College (they are partnership linked with this
university) to check out their Student Council. I will be
mentoring their president and helping to shape their council so it
works better for the future.

WORK IT OUT

Things are looking up, I’ve booked a couple of
days off work and right now I’m sat at home with a pile of books
around me, internet logged on to Pebble Pad and I’m spending the
next five hours to do my uni work. Sometimes this is
what it takes to get it done. So I really need to get off here
and get stuck into it.

my favourite reader! I can’t tell you what it is just yet, but I

now though what I can say is that after a weekend full of lectures
I haven’t really been able to get much study done. I contacted my
lecturer about my assignments for this week, I have a reading task
to complete so I need to jump on it asap. But the reality is I’m
not gonna be able to get this done until the end of the week, due
to work commitments. It’s been a busy week back after having two
weeks off.

I spent most of Tuesday catching up with everything, emails,
meetings etc. Had a chance to catch up with the rest of the team
briefly, before we had to go to Student Affairs Committee. I
realised in this meeting that as a team we are really working well
together and achieving some positive results. So yeah I don’t mind
singing our praises, there’s plenty more to come. So after the
meeting I had another meeting with some students. We are trying to
get a mini campaign together to help ensure we get as many students
registered to vote as possible, before the local elections in May.
We should be able to get some funding from Wolverhampton City
Council, which is pretty good, It’s a good cause and equally
important that the message is put out. Wow! That’s only half my
day, I’m in need of coffee!!

Second Part of the Day
Ahhhhh, the coffee has gone down well. (wipes mouth). No time for
lunch, again! I need to get more work done, I have to write an
order for some signage I’m having designed for the S.U. I’m a
stickler for detail, I need to get this order and quote re-done
because it turns out we are being charged for some signage that
should be charged to the University. It might only be £40, but I
wouldn’t be a responsible Trustee if I didn’t scrutinise every
single order that comes across my desk. SO I’ve sent it back for a
re-quote. Tick tock tick tock, time flies by and its now gone 5pm,
mostly everyone else has left but I’m still at my desk. I have an
important meeting that I’ve set up in order to look at working
better with International Students, I need to get the PowerPoint
done, images sourced and info collated and presentable, then
practiced before 12pm tomorrow. Go super Ken you can do it. 7:45pm
I’m ready to leave. I have the bulk of it done and I will add the
animations to it in bed before getting some
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz’s.

Presentations and
shortlistings
I’m so grateful for flexi-time. Today
I’ve had an extra hour in bed. I really needed it! Traffic doesn’t
seen as bad leaving a bit later, I’m in for ten o’clock and head
straight down stairs in the SU and get stuck straight into the
short listing for the position of Deputy CEO. Something about being
busy, I love it! It’s been a while since I’ve had to short list
applications for job, it’s satisfying, but at the same time it
reminds me why when I used to manage a sales team I would use an
employment agency, it takes away all the pressure of time
constraints. In between this I managed to get my important meeting
done and my presentation went down well. Another successful day,
but of course it’s not over yet. I can’t really give you the full
story just yet, because that will spoil the special surprise I have
install for you. So for now I will leave you with this closing
thought, “If a tree fell down in the middle of the wood, and there
was no one round for miles and miles, would anyone care?” I look
forward to seeing you again soon! Maybe I can get some reading
done?
left. Stuck here in cyberspace on the world wide
inter-blog. So for those of you still interested, and still
enjoying a vision of my minds thoughts, this blog entry continues
on from the last one where I promised a few revelations. My
claim to fame perhaps? Hmmm maybe save that for the next
paragraph. I was car hunting, oh the joys! I love my focus,
but what with these petrol prices, it’s getting expensive filling
the tank, £70 it’s costing me now! I need a diesel or better still,
I should go back to two wheels and get me a motorbike. That will
ease my journey to and from work It’s been years since mine got
stolen. I need a replacement. Nudge nudge, I’m happy to
receive offers. Anyway I’ve decided to keep this entry
strictly personal and the next one will be work related. But
it’s no fun if you don’t have a little moan about something,
right?

My journey to work

Harrison Learning Centre

As I mentioned in my previous blog, I had to
make a special journey into university, just to get a particular
book needed for completion of my online assignment. 1:30pm it
opened on a Saturday! Now I’m sorry but I know students are famed
for being lazy layabouts, but the reality is the majority are
not. We don’t even live a nine-2-five life. We want to be
able to get at our resources when we want to! So it is within
my power to address this issue. And guess what, I have! A
couple of weeks ago I submitted a petition from the Students’
Union asking for revised opening hours that are more in line
with the needs of students. I’m talking about 10am opening on
a Saturday and Sunday. It’s looking positive from the early
response I have received. So in all fairness, myself and Dave Anson
(Academic VP) hope to have a resolve in place by the start of the
next academic year. It was in my manifesto last year and I
can boldly and confidently say that I aim to deliver on this and
everything else. Including a new Students’ Union building on
Walsall Campus.

Me and Dave Anson (Academic VP)

In need of a date?

Well after that little rant and declaration, I
feel I need to revert back to my regular blog. So here I am,
shazam! Where was I? Oh yeah I mentioned a little gem of
information about me, well here it is. Not sure if you can
find it on you tube, but your little blogger and SU President was
once on a popular Saturday evening TV programme. Can you guess
what it is chuck? I was one of three contestants, had to
answer three questions, and there was a surprise surprise at the
end. No I’m not embarrassed, I had an awesome time, I got to
meet “Our Graham” and the funniest Scouser on television,
Cilla Black!

The naked truth

The day is over and there are a few things I
must do before I hit the sheets. My bath is set and my
accessories are all at hand:

Laptop

Ice cold drink

Razor

Towel

Music

Soap, shave foam &
flannel

Book

Ice lollies

Now I know this might seem like a weird
combination, and I’m not disagreeing, but I love my bath! I
usually spend around an hour in there. Boiling hot so I have
to ease myself in gently, laptop to play my music, or catch up on
my latest TV programme (today its Facejacker), soak the day away
and also catch up on some reading. I love to read Sci-fi
Fantasy, Terry Pratchett, but I don’t do any ‘pleasure
reading during term time, so today’s book is “Propaganda
and mass persuasion: a historical encyclopaedia, 1500 to the
present”. Sticking to my plan to really make an effort on
this module. If you’re wondering how I keep the pages
dry? I adopt the arms held out above you as you lie back
emerged under the suds.

Me in the bath!

All's good in the hood

I have to say that things are looking really
good. I know where I am with my studies, work is going really
well, plans for the future look positive. Tick tick tick. Not as in
bomb, but as in let’s tick off all the plus points and move on to
ticking a few more.

The weekend went well, as I’m sure you have
read. I didn’t mention the duties I had to do as a member of
the University’s Board of Governors. I had the honour and privilege
of being involved in the new appointment of our new Vice
Chancellor. I really am happy with the choice and we ratified
this on Saturday. I really look forward to working with him
next year, but of course I’ll also miss our outgoing VC, Caroline
Gipps. Something else to list on my CV and to file in
the many memories of my experience while at university. Oh and
lots of studying in there too, of course. And the occasional
night out, pizza, beer, etc.......

The week ahead

For now my week looks like it’s going to be
jammed packed with study. I have another week off work, but
I’m in on Thursday for a morning meeting that I just couldn’t (and
didn’t want to) miss. I have my Blockbuster vouchers at hand,
for when I need a break from the studies, and there’s a chance to
get lots of extra gym time in. And last of all, more time to
spend on this blog!

Next instalment coming up real soon and will
include my study plan, the joys of new car hunting, my opinion on
the Learning Centre opening times and a little gem of information
about me that will probably shock you. I’s nothing bad, I
promise, but if you would like a clue...it’s my claim to fame and
you may want my autograph after I tell you what it is.

Saturday night

University of Wolverhampton postgraduate student blog entry

Introduction

So it’s Saturday night. A guy like me you’d
expect to be out on the tiles, dressed up to the nines and making
some serious funky moves on the dance floor, with a JD & coke
in hand. Guess where I am right now? I’m sat in front
of my laptop working on my latest assignment! Back on the ole
pebble pad baby! Just submitted my final entry to this week’s
online task. I’ve been writing on Propaganda and the
Media. Had to answer two questions. I had to answer the
second question first because I didn’t have the book needed for
it. Managed to find it in the library, or should I say,
‘Harrison Learning Centre’. The only downside is I’ve been off all
week so had to make a special journey in on Saturday to finally
pick it up. But when I finally did, oooooh it was well worth
it, cus here I am on this Saturday night tapping away at the keys
on my trusty Samsung. Like I said before, I’m really gonna try for
an ‘A’ on this module, so that means making sure I contribute to
the forum every week and interact with the rest of the
group.

The middle bit

It’s not all bad though, I’m sat here with a
Budweiser, some cheese biscuits and ‘Dusk Till Dawn’ is on the TV
while I’m working away. I’d give you a quote right now from
the scene where they pull up at the bar in Mexico, but then I’d
have to put a reference into this blog, but I think I’ve done
enough Harvard Referencing for tonight. Oh look it’s not a
bar after all! Someone pass me a stake!

Conclusion

Tomorrow, week two’s task is posted online, so
I’m gonna switch off and catch the end of the film. Goodbye for
now.

What’s the best way to start my latest blog
entry? Usually I jump straight in with my first thought, but today
I’m thinking ‘let’s do something a little different’. I’m not
sure what it is, but let’s go with it anyway. So it’s been
just over a week since I had my Saturday lecture “Understanding War
in the Modern World”. Got there and started with my usual cup
of tea, of course, and a blueberry muffin. So tea and cake in
hand I head over to MC Building and I’m off at the third
floor. The first part of this lecture we looked at different
tactics used in World War Two and Blitzkrieg
Operations. Extensive scribing on my note pad, lots of
interesting facts to get down, really looking forward to getting my
teeth into this one. I’ve gotta do a presentation and an essay for
this module. Hopefully I’ll not have to spend two long trying
to decide what my topic will be, guess I’d better start doing some
research around the subject and start sooner rather than
later. Besides the fact that I always feel motivated by an
impending assignment deadline, I really feel that I should step my
game up and really get an early start on this one. Hmmmm, I’m
gonna really try and stick to this one, think I’ll make a
schedule.

Part two

The second part of my lecture was on the
Holocaust. Not really an area that I’ve studied much, but
obviously very relevant to WW2. Found out that my lecturer has
two PHD’s. That makes him a double doctor! So back to the
blog... and the lecture. So the theme of the lecture was
on Historiography and Controversies, looking at some of the current
and past writers on the subject, early instances of the word
Holocaust, and some of the events that happened. Lots of food
for thought, this is a full day of lectures and by now I’m low on
paper and my energy drink is nearly finished. Next Lecture in
a few weeks, in the meantime I’ll be getting stuck into my new
online module, looking at War Media and Propaganda. History
has never been so exciting, I can’t believe I hated history in
school, but here I am now having completed my undergrad and now
doing an MA in the subject.

What a coincidence that after a weekend on the
subject of war and conflict I turn up to work the following Monday
and the front entrance of MC Building is filled with a tank, rocket
launcher and a load of army vehicles and soldiers. It’s not
the latest tactics by students fighting the war on tuition fees,
but a new course just launching at the uni. Weird
coincidence, but the court yard is full and everyone is getting
their photo snapped as they pose in front of the tank.

Tank on campus!

Closing Thoughts- The Next Instalment

I’m trying really hard to update this blog on
the regular, but I’m also still trying to decide on the exact mix
between my academic, work and personal life. What do I write
about? What do I include? What do I miss out? Do I
keep it jovial or serious? Think I’ll go for all of em and try
to get a decent mix. So that’s what you have install, but for
now, I said earlier I was gonna start a schedule of work and make
sure I get stuck into these new modules. So why am I writing
this blog entry?

See you soon.....I’ve still gotta work on
planning the International and Erasmus events at the Students’
Union, Welcome party, and sort out the site visits to our other
campuses.

Installment two

University student blogs

The Essay

Hello again and here is instalment two.

So what have I been up to since the Christmas
break? I’ve been doing lots of reading, lots and lots of
reading!! Turns out I had a 6,000 word essay to do as part of
my MA. It was an independent study, so I eventually decided to
base it around Racism in the U.S. Military during the Vietnam
War. I got deep, I got well deep. That’s what I love
about history and the whole subject. I love the fact that on
this course I’m able to choose where and what I want to study and
can shape it to what interests me. It’s a very interesting
subject, whether you’re a geek or not.

12 Book Limit

So once again I had a pile of books,
definitely not enough to only have a twelve book limit on this
library card. Eight short loans and four long loans. It never
really works out, especially when you have a lot to read
about. I’m so glad that we have Ebray. If you don’t know what
it is, I strongly recommend that you look into it, but basically
its an on-line library of books and texts. Perfect for when you are
up to your loan limit and cant get any books out. Plus it saves you
getting a muscle work out by not having to carry a massive pile of
books home.

Pebble Pad

I was even back on “the award winning pebble
pad”, (I can’t call it anything else now, not since hearing it said
at every graduation I attended this past year). Managed to
get the final entry submitted. I really tried to push the
boat out by making sure that this last entry met all the assessment
criteria. I challenged, related to other comments and even
underpinned my comments with quotes from relevant sources.
Its worth 50% of the total module so no point in throwing away
valuable points. I now have to just keep my fingers crossed
and hope for the best. Phew…….

Submitted!!

The bonus is, (back to my 6,000 word
essay) that by careful planning and organisation, I was able
to finish my essay, leave it a day, then come back to it and read
over with fresh eyes, and a clear head. None of this running
from the printer and trying to get to registry to hand in before
5pm. Not me!! I printed it out, then took a leisurely
stroll over to “Here To Help”, handed in my assignment and thought
about a short period of relaxation. Well at least until next
Saturday and my whole day of lecture.

Personal Life

The holidays are a great thing. A chance
to relax after a semester of hard study. I managed to enjoy a
selection of cocktails, visit friend, spend some quality time with
family and loved ones. Enjoy and indulge in my love of
cooking and my greater love of eating. Managed to catch up and
step-up my gym activities. I haven’t played snooker in a
while, so I enjoyed the chance of getting a few games in, verty
expensive now!! One of the best things about having a little time
off from work and studies, is I was able to wash my car,
finally!!!

There are times when I have to really
sacrifice my gym/swim for the sake of the degree, but I do enjoy
getting back into the usual swing of thing. Luckily for me, it’s
too cold to do any work on my allotment garden. Yes that’s
right, I have an allotment garden!!

January is looking like it’s gonna be a very
busy month full of lots of new things especially work and
play. So much to say that I think I’ll have to save it for
another blog entry. If you can’t see it above this one, then
that means I haven’t written it yet. So check back shortly and
enjoy.

Thanks for taking an interest. See you
soon.

Happy New Year and all that

University blog entry

I welcome you back for a friendly

Hey hey hey, I told you I’d add a little more about my personal
life, so here it is. Don’t get too excited, I haven’t
revealed too much, but this should give you a little insight into
my inner thoughts...

Favourite Word:
Marvellous

I love the way it uses the whole of the mouth
to be first initialised and ends by being collected on the tongue
before being pushed out the mouth to declare just how amazing this
word is.

Favourite Chocolate:
Cadbury

Gotta be the best chocolate in the world! Yes
it’s a statement not a question. I love chocolate, but not to
the extent that I’d ever claim it is better than sex. I do have to
have my daily dose of chocolate, just to keep me ticking.

Favourite Cereal: Kellogg’s
Clusters

Actually I like all cereals, including
Kellogg’s All Bran (good for the system!) so if you take a look in
my cupboard, you will find roughly around ten different types of
cereal, including porridge oats. Never mind Ready Brek or Oats
So Simple, porridge has gotta be the easiest thing to make. I
never understand why people would want to spend their money on it,
so it takes 2 minutes to make in a microwave, well guess what, so
does a bowl of porridge oats. Add a little cinnamon and nutmeg
and a big dollop of golden syrup, perfection.

Breakfast!

Favourite Cartoon: Spider
Man

I used to collect the comics as a kid. Now I
still watch the cartoons as a bigger kid. Amongst other
cartoons of course, not forgetting X Men. Does that make me a
Marvel fan? I guess so, but I pretty much like most
cartoons. Sci-Fi is where it’s at for me. Don’t bring me any
soaps, unless its Dove. I cant believe Marvel has been brought
by Disney! Imagine what the next Spider Man film is gonna
look like...Will he be able to beat up bad guys? Or will he sing
them a song and send them to counselling. To be
continued...

Favourite Film:
Goodfellas

Although if I was gonna answer this question,
I’d really split them in to genres, such as comedy, gangster,
Sci-Fi , etc. So Goodfellas would be my favourite Gansta Film
and would defo feature in my top ten.

Favourite Music Artist:
Jamiroquai

Have been a fan ever since1994 when I first
heard “Too Young to Die”. I’ve seen them live 7 times. Just
brought tickets for the latest concert in April 2011 and can’t
believe that its £50 per ticket. But when you’re a fan, that’s
the price you pay. Loving the new Album “Rock Dust Light
Star”, loving the first track and the whole album. Can’t wait
till the concert, standing of course, gotta be able to dance my
feet off.

Me with my favourite music - Jamiroquai

Favourite Number: 0

Because although it’s nothing, when added to
something else it makes it more.

The Wrap up

So there it is, not quite in the style of Mary
Poppins, but you now know a few of my favourite
things. Obviously I have a lot more. I’m feeling an
opportunity to get a little bit interactive, so if you want to know
any more, simply post a comment and ask me a question. You never
know, I might answer it.

It’s
been a while since we last met but here I am with a fair few
paragraphs of juicy gossip. I’ve been getting stuck into my
course, busy with work, protesting about tuition fees and eaten a
few early mince pies.

The course

The course is going well and I’m getting used
to logging into Pebble Pad a few days a week. I’ve never used
Pebble Pad much in my past three years, now I’m never off
it. So for my Conflict Studies course it’s essential that I
make regular contributions to it, posting my thoughts and feelings,
issues that I have with studies, and interact with my fellow
students by sharing comments and opinions. Some people write
near essays on there and get a little carried away, but we will
keep that between us. I wish I was able to take out more books on
my library card, because I’m trying to read a broad range and
working on two different topics, twelve books doesn’t really
suffice. And I got a fine last week! I hate library fines,
feel like I’ve been mugged, but I guess it’s cheaper that buying
the actual book.

OPPS! Deadlines
ahead!

I managed to decide on my title for my
independent study. Finally! I’m going to base it around the Vietnam
Conflict (Vietnam War, depends on whether you’re American, it’s a
war or conflict). My title is still pretty much a work in progress,
but it will be along the lines of: “Was there a level of racism in
the U.S. Army and to what extent was this racism directed against
Afro-American soldiers?”. Obviously it needs a lot of work,
but as part of another module on the course, I’ve been getting lots
of practice in for research methods etc. Talking of which, I
handed in component three of that module last night. Talk
about pushing it to the wire, I have been so busy with work that I
nearly missed the deadline, but super Ken pulled it off and after
finishing work at 5pm, I headed straight to the library and banged
out seven straight hours and managed to get my work submitted by
the midnight!! Shazzamm! Definitely means that I’m gonna make
sure that I’m well prepared for the next deadline. I’m gonna
start it now, even thou submission date isn’t until Jan 12
2011.

So what else have I been up to? Work,
work and work.

Work in the Students’
Union

It’s been a busy time for me here at the
Students’ Union. We had our official opening last month and we
were honoured to have our very own Chancellor Lord Paul of
Marylebone officially open our building. That was an enjoyable
day that took a lot of planning; my speech went down really well
too.

So in between Trustee Board meetings, School
Meetings, Board of Governors, Chaplaincy meetings, I’ve even
managed to visit a few other Students’ Unions, attended the NUS
Black Students’ Winter Conference and managed to organise a
petition to our local MP, Paul Uppal, in an attempt to get him to
vote against higher tuition fees. We even managed to spend the
whole night in University as we staged a 12 hour occupation of the
MC Building on 8 December. This was our last attempt to show
government that we are opposed to plans to raise tuition fees to
£9,000 per year. Over 50 students and staff attended and we
were joined by representatives from Wolverhampton College, NUT, UCU
and the University, we enjoyed a night of debate and even managed a
few games of table tennis (some of our lecturers are skilled
technicians in the art of ping pong.

The wrap-up

So as you can see it’s been mega!!! Busy,
busy, busy and I haven’t even told you the half of it. Did I
manage to go out on the town? Get some Christmas shopping
done? What about my personal life. Looks like I missed
all this stuff out, so I’m gonna get this submitted and post a
special treat just for you. Stay tuned.

Between the sheets...

Hello again, so I guess that you found the
first instalment interesting enough to pop back and read
more? So welcome back! I’ve had a busy past few weeks and
I’m about to tell you all about it.

So I had my first lecture and got back into
the writing furiously and using up loads of paper as I desperately
try to get down the key points that the lecturer is
saying. It’s an interesting subject, very thought
provoking. Strangely enough the mixture in this group is a
lot different to my undergrad group; the mixture is roughly 50/50
male and female. Varying ages and backgrounds. I guess I’m lucky
that there are two friends from my undergrad course in history also
on this course. Turns out that I have a lot of reading to do and I
need to decide on my research title and independent study. Not sure
where to start as Conflict Studies is such a wide topic. So that
was my first lecture, all day Saturday! Not the usual feature in my
life as you will see…

Unlike the typical image of a student, I
actually work full time. I work within the University as President
of the Students’ Union. My post started in August and runs for
a whole year. I work on student issues and am responsible for
finance and governance of the Union. It’s kind of like the
perfect end to my degree as I still get to be in University and I’m
getting paid to do something I really enjoy. From planning Welcome
Week activities, NUS Conferences and sitting on the University
Board of Governors, my days are always varied and different.
I find that I do a lot of diplomacy, problem solving and
socializing with students.

This past week I was able to make history with
50,000 students and lecturers as we attended the NUS and UCU
National Demo. We travelled to London with 200 students on four
coaches. We enjoyed a peaceful demo and made our voices heard
by showing that we are not happy with the planned changes to H.E.
funding and rising tuition fees.

Well that gives you a little taste of my work
life; it may sound like a 9-5 but is definitely not. Which means I
have to make sure that I utilise my diary effectively to make sure
that I get a decent balance of study and work. My plan has always
been a minimum of one hour reading a night and Saturday and Sunday
to do the bulk of my study. I may be straying a little off track,
but nothing focuses me more that a looming assignment deadline. I
have a literature review to do and I have a fair few books to read
before trying to get my head around Pebble Pad. It’s been a couple
years since I last used it. Most of the work is on Pebble Pad
for my first module, so I have to get the old memory banks of my
brain working again and get my teeth into it.

I’m ok, I managed to figure it out and get a
load of comments logged onto it. I can’t believe that I was in the
library the other day and left with a pile of books as tall as a
small child (see below). Looks like I’m gonna be having a weekend
between the sheets, it’s a pity they aren’t silk sheets! So here
draws the end of another instalment of the Kenny show. It’s time
for me to get back on with my studies. But not before I sneak off
to the gym and bang out a few reps.

Catch you next time when I will let you know a
little more about what I get up to in my social life and a bit more
about my course.

studies at the University of Wolverhampton. I’ll be doing
Conflict Studies. I’ve spent the last three years here doing a
joint degree in History and Deaf Studies. Yes I know it’s an
unusual combination, especially when people think I mean "death"
rather than "deaf", but as you can probably guess, I get the usual
proceeding jokes. So the history part of the course will
allow me to later train to become a teacher in a deaf school (hence
deaf studies).

So a little more about me...I'm a mature student who
has spent my who life living in Birmingham, which makes me a
proud 'Brummy' born and bred. I commute into uni every day,
but I usually drive in to Walsall campus and get the free shuttle
bus. Not just because I want to save the planet and reduce my
carbon footprint, but probably more relevant, I can jump on the
free shuttle bus that takes me into City Campus. I have
always found this time perfect to get in some last minute reading
before my next lecture.

Now if you are an undergrad about to start, or even nearing
completion, you are probably thinking, “why Ken after all the
stress of the past three years, dissertation and exams, are you now
about to subject yourself to another year of it?”…erm I guess I’ll
have to answer by saying, yes it was stressful at times, what with
assignment deadlines etc, but to be honest I kind of thrived on
it. It’s not all about the academia; I’ve actually had an
amazing time here over the past three years. In my first year
I joined the Frisbee team, I played capoeira, tried and quit
Pilates (I don’t think I’m flexible enough, phew) brushed up on my
British Sign Language skills by joining the Sign Language
Society. Wow, the list really does go on…..I’ve tried out
different clubs, pubs and grubs, from Planet rock club, to the 90’s
bar called Babylon, wrapping up with a selection of fast-food
places at the end of the night where you can get a pizza for
£2!

OK I know that right now I’m probably sounding
like a promotions and advertising campaign for the Uni and
Wolverhampton City Council, but what I’m really saying is that I
love the choice and variety that this town and University has to
offer.

So what’s the status of my experience so
far? I’m enrolled. I’ve got my modules registered,
(eventually) and I’m about to start my first lecture as a Postgrad
this Saturday. How exciting is that! I get the whole week
off, and my lecture is on a Saturday all day. Ooops what I
actually mean is, I get the whole week for reading and reflection.
Yeah that’s it!
