Research Institute in Healthcare Science Facilities

To underpin the research activities of RIHS, the University has invested heavily in the recruitment of research active staff and the provision of high quality research facilities through a combination of refurbishment and new-build.

For example, there has been an investment of £1.6million to provide world-class refurbished laboratory accommodation for biomedical science, and new-build support for psychology and exercise physiology research. In addition, over the last two years there has been considerable investment in scientific equipment.

Laboratory-based biomedicine

There are extensive facilities for cell culture including the preparation of monoclonal antibodies, peptide synthesis and analysis, molecular genetics and molecular cytogenetics and DNA sequencing, microscopy including confocal microscopy, fluorescence microcopy and scanning electron microscopy. There are also facilities for real-time and conventional PCR, flow cytometry and microarray analysis.

Psychology

There are newly-built research laboratories equipped for visual perception research, health psychology research, social and developmental psychology research, with comprehensive libraries of psychology tests and videos and research equipment including the Observer Video Pro for behaviourial observation studies.

Sports science

The Walsall Campus is a centre for sporting excellence in the region, and has recently benefited from a mutli-million pound investment programme.

New facilities include a 12-court sports hall, an elite judo facility, a fitness centre (complete with the latest cardiovascular equipment), an athletics track, a 20-metre swimming pool and a full-size all-weather pitch. There is also a weights room with free weights and resistance machines.

We offer extensive research laboratory facilities including human performance, biomechanics laboratories, a dedicated sports psychology room and an exercise physiology laboratory. Find out more about our Sports facilities.
