Information and Reference Management

RefWorks is a web-based reference management system that allows to collect references from a range of online sources, manage and organise your reference library, and import your references into Word using ‘Write-N-Cite’. RefWorks is available to all staff and students.

RefWorks

  1. To access RefWorks go to http://www.refworks.com/refworks from a University computer
  2. Click on Sign Up for an Individual Account
  3. Complete the appropriate information and click on Register.

If you are accessing RefWorks from off-campus, you will need to enter the group code: RWUWolverhampton before registering for an individual account.

Please note there is currently a problem exporting references from the Library Catalogue to RefWorks when you are off campus.

Other reference management tools

There are a number of other services offering similar features to RefWorks:

  • EndNote Web -   a web based version of EndNote available through the Web of Knowledge database. It is freely accessible to students and staff via your University login. Go to the Web of Knowledge and click on ‘My EndNote Web’ to register for an account.
  • Zotero - free reference management extension for users of the Firefox browser.
  • Mendeley - Like iTunes™  for research papers. Mendeley is a free research management tool for desktop and web.
  • Connotea - free online reference management aimed at clinicians and scientists.

Bookmarking

Online bookmarking services are useful for keeping track of your favourite or most-used websites. Some popular free sites are listed below. You will also find toolbar versions in your Internet browser.

Feed Readers

A feed reader is a tool for subscribing to web feeds. Most news websites and blogs provide the option of subscribing to updates via a feed as do an increasing number of academic publishers and online databases. It is a useful way of monitoring new publications and research papers. Google Reader is a popular web-based feed reader.
