Skills Drop-in Sessions and Maths Support

Drop-ins Header

Skills for Learning Drop-ins

As a University of Wolverhampton student you can access free 1:1 academic skills advice to help you develop and improve your study skills and academic skills techniques. Through the development of these skills you can become a more effective student.

What is a drop-in session?

It is an opportunity to have an individual, one-on-one discussion with a Learning and Skills Librarian about your academic or study skills. The advice is not subject-specific. Instead, we aim to develop your independent learning skills by providing advice on general techniques and strategies that you can apply to your subject area.

Drop-in visits usually last for around 20 minutes.

What support is provided?

The Learning and Skills Librarian can offer guidance on various aspects of your academic and study skills, for example:

  • exam revision
  • planning and writing your academic assignments
  • how to use your time efficiently and organise your academic study
  • how to take effective notes during lectures
  • tips on delivering effective presentations

For help and advice on finding information, locating resources, referencing and RefWorks, please ask at the Helpdesk located at the entrance to the Learning Centre.

House rules

  • You are very welcome to bring in samples of your writing to exemplify, for instance, your difficulties with academic writing. However, no proofreading will be offered, nor will your essay / assignment be read and revised before submission.
  • The advice is not subject-specific. Consultations cannot provide advice on matters relating to content (i.e that of your discipline).
  • Proof reading is not part of the 1:1 service. If you would like to improve your proof reading skills, a Guide to Proofreading is available, and proof reading techniques are covered as part of the Good Academic Practice and Writing your Assignment workshops
  • Although the Skills Development Team are here to help you with your academic skills development, we can't do your coursework for you. If you visit the centre with questions related to coursework, we are happy to talk about the topics generally, but we cannot help answer specific assessed questions.
  • Drop-ins are a face-to-face exercise only therefore, no materials are accepted/read via email.

Maths Support in the Skills Zone

The maths support centre is open to all students from any school studying any subject in any year. If you want help with any level of mathematics, statistics or numeracy come and ask.

The maths support centre is staffed by the academic staff from the Mathematics department alongside some of our first class graduates and postgraduate mathematics students. We can go through your notes with you, show you extra examples, go through a specific technique with you or teach you how to use the specialist maths or statistical software we have available.

For example:

  • Nursing or Pharmacy students struggling with those drug calculations, come and ask us for some extra help.
  • Engineering students having trouble understanding partial fractions, come and ask us to explain it
  • Having difficulty completing the statistical analysis for your final year project, come and ask us for advice.
  • Facing a numeracy test at your interview, come and ask us about improving your skills.

All our staff are friendly, approachable and willing to help.
