Students requiring a Tier 4 visa

If you require a Tier 4 visa, you must demonstrate that you have the correct English language requirements to study in the UK. The requirements will differ depending on whether you are applying to study a Foundation or a Pre-Sessional English programme or whether you are applying to study at degree level.

Studying below degree level

If you want to study a course below degree level such as the International Foundation Year Courses, which can provide you with an educational bridge to start on a degree course of your choice, subject to professional body requirements. Or our Pre-sessional English language courses which have a choice of entry from Beginner to University Preparation Academic Language skills  you must have an English language test result which is recognised by United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The two accepted tests are IELTS and Trinity College London ISE. These are known as SELTS (Secure English Language Tests). For further TIER 4 Guidance , please see Government Guidance for Migrant Tier 4 visa.

You do not need to demonstrate English language competence if you:

  • have previously completed an academic qualification equivalent to a UK degree which was taught in a 'majority English-speaking' country
  • are a national from a 'majority English-speaking' country

What if I haven't reached this standard?

Don't worry - here are the details for our pre-sessional courses.

Don't forget we have our own Wolverhampton English Proficiency Examination (WEPE test) which can be used to determine your level of English for entry to courses at the University of Wolverhampton. These tests are held on the first Wednesday of each month with overseas tests led by Gill Outterside.
