Research interests

My research interest is in corporate governance and specifically the roles, processes and behaviours of boards of directors. Recent projects have focused on three areas. First, a joint project with Minichilli (Bocconi, Huse (BI Oslo) and Nordqvist (Jonkoping) investigated a multi-dimensional model of leadership and leadership efficacy in boards in small firms. The findings from the project suggest that behavioural and process-based dimensions of leadership have greater predictive powers for board performance than structural leadership characteristics alone. A second project involves a longitudinal study of board tasks and board processes in private, public and voluntary sector organisations in the West Midlands. Here, the outcomes also included board evaluations and feedback to the participating boards. Finally, a third research stream investigates the effects of board diversity. In a joint European project with Huse (BI Oslo), Brogi (La Sapienza) and Hansen (Gelsenkirchen), we investigate the dissemination and effects of recent quota laws on women representation on boards from the perspective of policy-makers, female board members and other advocacy groups.  A further project with PhD student Walker aims to uncover how deeper-level diversity, specifically diversity in personality traits, affects processes and behaviours in the boardroom.
