Statement
My Masters research is concerned with the instability of visual
perception. My work explores the uncertainty of the visual system
and how this can be adopted in a pedagogic setting for learning how
and why we see what we do.
Illusions elicited by colour interactivity are well documented,
but what is less understood is why context is so important, and why
we see illusions. Exploring this question and relating it to models
of pedagogy and learning is central to my research. By highlighting
the relativity and interaction of colour, geometry, spatial
illusion; and focusing attention on the incongruity of the visual
system my work sets out to question our relationship with the world
at large.
Research outcomes have included the design of a learning pack
that engages children in questioning preconceived notions of
learned behaviour by enabling them to build and interact with
optical illusions. A website/digital interface has also been
developed where pupils can experiment with optical art and
generative sound manipulation.
