What is a legal executive?
A legal executive is a qualified lawyer. The term 'legal executive'
can only be used by Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Legal
Executives (CILEx), who have followed one of the prescribed routes
How to qualify as a legal executive
The academic part of the CILEx training
programme is made up of two stages of training:
Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Law and Practice
Together these two awards form the first academic stage
in the process of becoming a Legal Executive Lawyer.
Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice
This forms the last academic stage you will require to study
to be a Legal Executive lawyer.
For those already holding a qualifying law degree, we also offer
a new Graduate Fast Track diploma which can be used instead of
the LPC or BPTC to complete the academic stage of your legal
Once you complete the Level 3 stage of your
academic training you will become an Associate Member of CILEx, and
after you complete the Level 6 stage you will become a Graduate
Member of CILEx.
You also need to fulfil the requirements for
five years’ qualifying employment in order to become a Fellow of
CILEx, two years of which must take place after you have become a
What are the career and work opportunities?
Being a legal executive lawyer is a fulfilling
and rewarding career. In a law firm you could be a partner (to
share in the firm’s profits), or a senior member of staff or
department head with a significant client following.
Opportunities also exist for senior roles in
the legal departments of commercial organisations, charities,
government agencies and local authorities and in the judiciary.
