Career Lab Programme

This is our programme of careers workshops and presentations, open to all students and recent graduates of the University, and covering a wide range of topics to help you plan your career and prepare yourself for the world of work. 

Each of the sessions stands alone, so you can come to as many or as few as you wish.  Places are limited, but sessions will run again if they are over-subscribed.  Please book your place through Jobs and Events

PGCE Interviews

Interviewers are assessing your suitability for a teaching career, not just a course, and expect an awareness of education issues and evidence of the skills essential in teaching.  Find out how to prepare for the questions and activities you are likely to encounter.

This session is for students who have applied for teacher training and are preparing for interview.

Dealing with Nerves Going for interviews and delivering presentations can be scary and most of us feel nervous in these situations – it’s just normal.  This session will give you practical tips and strategies to cope if you feel your nerves might stop you performing at your best.

A degree is not enough in a competitive employment market; you need evidence of your employability skills too.   This session tells you about the University’s Employability Award, outlining the tasks involved and the help available to complete them.  You will have the opportunity to sign up for the award after the session.

Telephone Interviews

More and more employers are using telephone interviews to sift candidates in the selection process, and it is essential to prepare yourself specifically for this type of activity.  We will tell you how and why employers use telephone interviews and what you can expect from them.  We will also look at telephone contacts with employers that you might initiate yourself.

Make your words work for you

Lots of top employers report that even the brightest graduates often get it wrong when it comes to grammar, punctuation and spelling.  This session will look at some of the most common errors we see on students’ CVs and application forms and equip you with simple rules to improve your accuracy. 

We will also tell you about the kind of vocabulary that strengthens an application and creates a positive and assertive impression of you.

Assessment Centre

If you are invited to an assessment centre you’re normally in with a good chance of getting a job offer.  This session helps you make the most of the opportunity by explaining what employers are looking for in an assessment centre and offering you the chance to practise some typical selection activities, including psychometric tests and group tasks.

Psychometric Test  Session

A rare opportunity to take numeracy, literacy and spatial awareness tests commonly used by employers for selection purposes under test conditions and receive feedback on your performance.

Please note that to replicate test conditions as closely as we can, latecomers will not be allowed to join the session.

Social Media/LinkedIn and Your Career

 In this session we will show you effective ways in which you can use LinkedIn to: build your professional network, start interacting with other LinkedIn users and improve your profile and brand.

This session is relevant to you if you are already using social media for fun but you’re not sure about how to use LinkedIn to progress your career.

Non-verbal Messages Experts estimate that over 70% of your message is conveyed non-verbally, for example by your body language, your voice and what you wear, rather than what you actually say.  This session looks at how this should influence your behaviour in interviews and other interactions.
