Brummy born and bred
Hi my name is Ken and I'm just about to start my postgrad
studies at the University of Wolverhampton. I’ll be doing
Conflict Studies. I’ve spent the last three years here doing a
joint degree in History and Deaf Studies. Yes I know it’s an
unusual combination, especially when people think I mean "death"
rather than "deaf", but as you can probably guess, I get the usual
proceeding jokes. So the history part of the course will
allow me to later train to become a teacher in a deaf school (hence
deaf studies).
So a little more about me...I'm a mature student who
has spent my who life living in Birmingham, which makes me a
proud 'Brummy' born and bred. I commute into uni every day,
but I usually drive in to Walsall campus and get the free shuttle
bus. Not just because I want to save the planet and reduce my
carbon footprint, but probably more relevant, I can jump on the
free shuttle bus that takes me into City Campus. I have
always found this time perfect to get in some last minute reading
before my next lecture.
Now if you are an undergrad about to start, or even nearing
completion, you are probably thinking, “why Ken after all the
stress of the past three years, dissertation and exams, are you now
about to subject yourself to another year of it?”…erm I guess I’ll
have to answer by saying, yes it was stressful at times, what with
assignment deadlines etc, but to be honest I kind of thrived on
it. It’s not all about the academia; I’ve actually had an
amazing time here over the past three years. In my first year
I joined the Frisbee team, I played capoeira, tried and quit
Pilates (I don’t think I’m flexible enough, phew) brushed up on my
British Sign Language skills by joining the Sign Language
Society. Wow, the list really does go on…..I’ve tried out
different clubs, pubs and grubs, from Planet rock club, to the 90’s
bar called Babylon, wrapping up with a selection of fast-food
places at the end of the night where you can get a pizza for
£2!
OK I know that right now I’m probably sounding
like a promotions and advertising campaign for the Uni and
Wolverhampton City Council, but what I’m really saying is that I
love the choice and variety that this town and University has to
offer.
So what’s the status of my experience so
far? I’m enrolled. I’ve got my modules registered,
(eventually) and I’m about to start my first lecture as a Postgrad
this Saturday. How exciting is that! I get the whole week
off, and my lecture is on a Saturday all day. Ooops what I
actually mean is, I get the whole week for reading and reflection.
Yeah that’s it!
