Wolverhampton Applied Psychology Research Group (WARG)
As an applied researcher I am interested in the development of research and the application of research findings that aim to improve the lives of people.
My primary research focus is on the empowerment, wellbeing, communication and life course of people with intellectual disabilities. My research work has concentrated on the health and social wellbeing of people with intellectual disabilities at different life stages. I have also been involved in a number of multidisciplinary collaborative investigations into the impact and effectiveness of interventions for people with intellectual disabilities and those who support them.
Specific projects have looked at communication, eating and drinking safety and enjoyment, physical and oral health, ageing, transition and interpersonal relationships. I have also conducted national investigations into clinical practice, the wellbeing of people with intellectual disabilities and their families and narrative studies documenting the lifestories of people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Current research work includes the interface between people with intellectual disabilities and the criminal justice system, communication of people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities, work around collaboration between the families of people with intellectual disabilities and support services, and the use of social networking sites by people with intellectual disabilities. I also coordinate the Wolverhampton Applied Research Group (WARG).
