S1: Introduction to Research Supervision at UoW

*Mandatory for new research supervisors*

The session is repeated 2 times per academic year

  • Tuesday 7 May 2013, 13:00 -17:00 Chaplaincy

This is a one afternoon workshop and is essential for recently appointed Research Supervisors or those who have not attended research supervision development for three years or more. This workshop provides professional development that will enable you to support a typical research student throughout the life cycle of a typical research degree.

This formal workshop is supplemented by the optional “Experienced Research Supervisors' Workshops’, i.e. a series of more in-depth workshops that focus on specific stages or issues within the research degree life cycle.

Introduction to Research Supervision workshop - Objectives

On completion of this workshop the Research Supervisor should:

  • be able to design a schedule of supervision which supports students to achieve defined outcomes and successfully to complete a research degree programme;
  • be able to conduct successful and productive supervision sessions;
  • be able to assist/counsel the student and offer practical and moral support in the resolution of problems related to their research and general progress
  • be able to identify and access and/or advise on appropriate support facilities and resources for postgraduate research students;
  • be conversant with the full annual life cycle of a research student and the application of all necessary policies and procedures within that life cycle (including admission, end of year progress review, confirmation of research degree programme, examination arrangements, complaints procedure etc.);
  • have a working knowledge of University staff/roles, committees and other forums, and their involvement and responsibilities in relation to research students;
  • understand her/his involvement in supporting skills development for all research students.

S2: Towards Timely Completion: Monitoring progress and supporting research students’ skills development

Date: 5 Feb 2013, 14:00-16:00, Room TBC

In this session you will consider how to:

  • Support your students to timely completion;
  • Identify training needs, personal development portfolios (PDPs) and action planning.
  • Adopt appropriate support strategies at landmark stages and difficult phases
  • Implement the University’s code of practice;
  • Take an active role in skills development for your research students.

S3: Chairing a research degree examination

Dates

  • 01 Nov 2012, 14:00-16:00, MI005
  • 14 May 2013, 14:00-16:00,  Chaplaincy

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • approach chairing a viva with confidence;
  • ensure that the University’s regulations and Code of Practice are fully observed;
  • ensure a fair and appropriate experience for the candidate.

Who should attend:
All newly appointed Chairs are expected to attend the briefing workshop. In addition, all members of staff with research supervisory experience who anticipate a request to chair research degree examinations are encouraged to attend this workshop.

S4: Supporting research students to the examination stage, including the viva voce

Date: 12 Mar 2013, 14:00-16:00, Chaplaincy

By the end of the session you will be able to

  • implement the University’s code of practice;
  • prepare your students to approach the viva voce with confidence;
  • support your students post-viva.

Who should attend:
supervisors of students approaching the examination stage of their research degree programme.

S5: Examining a research degree

Dates:

  • 29 Jan 2013, 14:00-16:00 MI005
  • 23 Apr 2013, 14:00-16:00 Chaplaincy

By the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Apply the UoW examination process and procedures appropriately
  • Clarify the responsibilities of internal and external examiners – what do you do to prepare?
  • Articulate what constitutes a “good” thesis; learning outcomes and assessment criteria;
  • Conduct a viva voce examination
  • Deal with post viva issues - examination outcomes.

Who should attend:
this workshop is compulsory for all newly appointed, inexperienced MPhil and PhD examiners. Experienced examiners should regard this as an opportunity to update on current requirements.
