Job seeking skills

Making a successful application for a job or placement opportunity requires careful preparation and a range of skills; it can be a long and tough process!  This advice and information will help you with each stage of the process.

Written applications

Your CV or application form, along with your covering letter, whether paper-based or online, will usually be the first impression you create with an employer.  Make sure it's a good one!

Interviews

Face to face selection processes can take several forms.  Your interview might include assessment centre activities or psychometric tests or require you to give a presentation.

Hidden job market

Many jobs and placement opportunities are never advertised, so it is important to consider how you can tap into this hidden jobs market through speculative applications and networking.

What employers want

Before you put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard!) and throughout the whole application process you need to keep in mind exactly what employers want, so that you can target your application effectively.
