The University of Wolverhampton is committed to supporting lifelong learning and enabling individuals to have opportunities to achieve recognition for their achievements in a range of settings.
The University’s vision is “to be The Opportunity University – renowned for creativity and innovation, developing students and staff who are entrepreneurial, eminently employable and well-connected within a research and professionally informed environment” and its mission is: “to be an employer-focused university connected with our local, national and global communities delivering opportunity and academic excellence”. ** University of Wolverhampton mission statement.
In order to further develop more opportunities for learners to achieve recognition for their achievements the University has set up the Wolverhampton Institute for Work-based Learning (WIWBL).
Work-based Learning at the University of Wolverhampton is defined as:
‘is a learning process which focuses university level critical thinking upon work (paid or unpaid) in order to facilitate the recognition, acquisition and application of individual and collective knowledge, skills and abilities, to achieve specific outcomes of significance to the learner, their work and the university.’ Garnett, 2004
The University of Wolverhampton is committed to enhancing the employability of its students and the employment of its graduates. Goal 1 of the Enterprise and Employability Sub-strategy, 2012-2017, is to: “provide all of our students with the opportunity to undertake an element of structured, credit-bearing, career-relevant work experience (short, medium and long term) as part of their course. This will include both full-time and part-time, paid and unpaid, internships, volunteering, charity work and consultancy opportunities with University partners, suppliers and tenant companies as well as self-employment opportunities.”
Placement Learning at the University of Wolverhampton:
‘is regarded as the learning achieved during an agreed and negotiated period of learning that takes place outside the institution at which the full or part-time student is enrolled or engaged in learning.’ QAA, 2007
