Points-Based Immigration System

Immigration rules affect all non-European Union nationals who want to come to the UK to study or work.

The Points Based System (PBS) affects Non EU Nationals (also known as visa nationals) wanting to come to the UK to study or work, and for those already in the UK who want to extend their stay in these categories. It is divided into 5 categories or Tiers, with students coming under Tier 4.

The immigration rules for Tier 4 were launched on 31 March 2009, so any visa nationals wanting to study in the UK have to meet the requirements of these rules. The rules include several new terms that may cause you some confusion. Read out Glossary if you're unsure of what they mean.

Applying for student visas

You will need to apply for the visa at your local High Commission or Visa Application Centre.

They will be able to tell you what the application procedure is at that particular centre. As part of the visa application process you will need to provide your biometric information, submit your completed application form and documents, and pay the visa fee.

Travelling to the UK

You must arrive at the University before the start date for your course – if you don’t arrive in time you will not be allowed to start the course and will have to defer your start date and return to your home country.  The University of Wolverhampton is responsible for monitoring your enrolment and must tell the UK Border Agency if you have not arrived in time to start your course.

After you have arrived at the University of Wolverhampton

There are some rules that you must be aware of during your stay in the UK.

  1. When you enrol at the University of Wolverhampton we must take a copy of your passport and visa to keep on our records.
  2. The University of Wolverhampton will be required to monitor your engagement over the academic year. If you are unable to attend classes due to illness or another valid reason, you must make sure you have told your tutors or someone in the school so that you do not get marked as being absent without permission. If you arenot engaging with your studies, will try to contact you. If we find you are not engaging with your studies we will be expected to report your absence to the UK Border Agency.
  3. You must make sure your contact details are up to date at all times. You will be able to update your student record if you move house or change your contact details.
