Links with industry

It's no longer enough to learn the theory.  To get ahead you also need to learn the trade too!

The School of Law, Social Sciences and Communications has long standing links with industry in many of our subject areas:

Legal profession

We have long standing links with the local profession:

  • Citizens Advice Bureau – opportunity for students to train as volunteer CAB advisors.
  • Mentoring Scheme – students with little or no experience of legal practice are assigned to local solicitors who give the students a feel of what practice is all about.
  • The Solicitors' Liaison Committee - a consultative committee made up of senior local practitioners and members of the LPC teaching team.  The aim of the committee is to discuss changes in practice and the ongoing development of the LPC.
  • The New Practitioners' Forum - a consultative committee made up of former Wolverhampton LPC students who are now trainees and recently qualified solicitors and also members of the LPC teaching team.  The aim of the committee is to discuss changes in practice and the ongoing development of the LPC.

In addition, the Lex 21 initiative was introduced in April 2008. This initiative aims to put the School at the heart of local legal practices in a number of areas including CPD, recruitment and placement opportunities

Media

Institute of Media ArtsThe School is proud to have a dedicated Institute of Media Arts which is a centre of excellence providing top flight professional development opportunities to people working in the industry.

We also organise seminars featuring key figures from the media industry. Previous guest speakers have included:

  • Former BBC Director General Greg Dyke
  • Current BBC Chairman Michael Grade
  • Former Chief Executive of ITN, Stewart Purvis
  • Channel 4 boss Mark Thompson

A number of our staff are practising industry professionals and work in a variety of sectors including broadcast journalism and public relations.

Links with the Light House Media Centre gives Film Studies students access to excellent facilities for studying film and media.

World Languages

The Centre for Communication and Language Training assists organisations by offering services such as courses in language teaching, translation and interpreting work

Social Sciences

We've got links with universities around the world – the University of Havana in Cuba, and universities in Japan, Hong Kong, America, Tunisia and Russia. It means nationally-respected scholars are invited to share their expertise in staff and student seminars.
